This seller won’t be too pleased with the appraiser

The listing seems to suggest that the seller thinks the watch is worth £16k based on a “professional” appraisal ... the seller will be lucky if he nets more than the scrap gold value after eBay takes its cut. No reserve price.

Seller will probably get a bunch of people adding it to their watch lists from this post and get excited by all the “interest”.

Take off the 70's porn star bracelet, put on a nice leather strap, and you'll have a nice starter dress watch. And of course, it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

Despite it being no reserve, I wonder if this statement in the description is an advanced warning that the seller will cancel the sale if it fails to reach their unrealistic price.

“**this item has been professionally valued at more than £16,000 and we will not be looking at offers less than this**”

The seller has a photo of the appraisal, but I notice that the actual appraised price is nowhere on it! (Unless I completely missed it). I have to think that the appraisal was for 1600 GBP, not 16,000. For an insurance appraisal, I think that would be reasonable. Either the seller has a typo, misread it, or is trying to find a sucker.

My father has a totally original version of that watch (his is square and bracelet is the same width) from 1964 as an engagement present from my mother, complete with the incredible bracelet, box and paperwork.
Getting an insurance appraisal was interesting as that sort of figure was discussed as a replacement ie ‘solid gold omega watch’. In reality the watch is only worth the value of the gold.

When I had my Planet Ocean 2500 appraised by Omega for insurance purposes they put the RRP of the closest match current model. I would expect that’s what has happened here £16k is a new for old replacement value for a gold Omega.

Your suspicion was confirmed as the seller cancelled the sale with about 1 minute left in the auction. The high bid was just above £1000.

Wow that escalated quickly towards the end, it was at £200 ish when I checked with about a day to go.

They can’t really believe it’s worth £16k otherwise they’d have tried to sell it to watch dealers not put it on a no reserve auction on eBay.

Anyway looking forward to seeing it relisted soon.

Perhaps when it's re-listed OP can add "limited edition 78k gold" or "ultra rare bespoke amazing patina once possibly worn by Greta Garbo and/or JFK" to the description. 🙄::stirthepot::
