This is typically the type of fluff where you see an astronomical starting price too, so kudos to the seller for the $500 start. No, I don't think it's worth that, but it's not outside the realm of reasonability compared to where it could be.

Watch worth $100 at much being generous. Pic is just that, a pic of some ppl at a bar table many decades ago. I could buy an ordinary vintage watch for $30, add a random pic of someone during the 50s and made a similar claim. Totally ludicrous.

Even if the story were true (leap of faith here), why would a random unknown gangster add any value to an utterly unremarkable object like that?

Not random unknown -- "A FAMOUS NEW YORK GANGSTER"

That adds thousands to the value...

Who is he? Do you identify him on pic? In case the depicted man was indeed an identifiable "famous gangster", where is proof that watch was his?

About the watch, that isn't even a 40s style, I'd bet on early 60s, which could be confirmed by seeing movement... oh wait!

If someone really wants to pay "thousands" for such a watch gimme a couple of hours and I'll make a listing like OP, pics and all.

The guy who wore that watch was a house painter who also did his own carpentry.

He knew "what it is." That's why he wore a cheap watch.

He probably escorted a few guys to Australia as well.
