Thinking About Getting A 1960'a Seamaster

Hey guys

First post on this forum 馃榾

I'm thinking about getting a vintage 1960's sea master, something like this I think

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370660121...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_6628wt_1165

Anyway, I need some advise. I know that this can't really be answered for this specific watch but how good are these old watches at keeping water out? and keeping time? I mean in general.

I'm looking to spend about 拢500 but if it goes out of time every day it's totally pointless. I want to wear the watch everyday. I'm not so bothered about the water thing so much as it keeping time. Most auctions for vintage watches always say that they cant guarantee that the watch will keep time just to cover their backs anyway.

Just waned some feedback and advise from the people who probably know best 馃榾

Cheers

B

60s Seamasters with Cal 560 series movements are likely to be more reliable and more accurate than any of the other watches in your collection. Its not a dive watch, and the dial and hands are not original, so that particular watch is worth very little.

Personally I wouldnt trust any vintage watch to keep out water unless it has been recently properly tested. I use my Seiko divers for anything that involves water as they are cheap to maintain and the consequences of a leak are not so expensive 馃槜

As to time keeping, both my automatic Omegas keep pretty good time, certainly within a few seconds a day. Would you consider a quartz instead of an automatic? Quartz dont have the character and value of an automatic but they certainly have accuracy 馃槈

What is it about that particular dial style that gets all the inexperienced vintage Omega buyers hot for it? It's no wonder you see so many refinished dials done like that.

B, stay away from that. Look for a correct vintage piece. While you might not consider yourself a collector now, if you do morph into one down the line (and odds are good that you will get hooked) you would regret this purchase.

Its an attempt at creating the classic vintage 300m Seamaster look .......from a watch which to me looks like a Geneve case. I think the quote 'All watches are guaranteed 100% genuine' is a bit optimistic?

Genuine what? The seller doesn't say "Genuine Omega" so the only thing they're legally guaranteeing is that it's a watch.

100% Agree. It happened to me.

In deed, ref 166.041 (166.0041) is a Geneve.

I report at least half a dozen of these Frankens every week, unfortunately eBay UK has on of the worst records of taking this junk down.

Hey guys

Thanks for your replies. So I'm guessing ebay is a no go then? I just like the look of them vintage seamasters and highly doubt I will start collecting watches. someone recommended the seamaster to me so that's what spurred my interested.

I also found this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271073988...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_7125wt_1141

or this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290786019...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_7093wt_1398

would also be a rip off?

They are both located in london which I would trust alot more than buy abroad.

Those dials are all wrong, strange as it sounds you're actually worse off buying London than the USA in a lot of cases, the UK market is a cesspool

Brendan, despite you recent poor finds, there are some nice watches out there. Don't give up hope.
