These two dials, listed as original; are they ?

The first one is missing the Swiss, the sixes look wrong/inconsistent to me and is the logo period correct for 1955 and it appears smudged in numbers down around the 5 - 7 .

the second appears to have a smudge in the logo and definately looks like reapplied loom. 1963

Any thoughts on these two? I'd love a steel 30CH but I think that they may be redials at worst, redone or washed at best.

Both state in the condition reports that they're relumes. Nick said he's inspected the dials and they're original. Wish they had better high-res photos.

The first one is the one that really doesn't look right. Muddy printing in places.

Thanks, did you zoom on the second one? The g, I, and n all appear smudged.

This appears to be the same watch. To my eyes, the "smudged" letters do not suggest refinishing however I am not equipped to comment on the originality of the hour and minute hands. The other hands do look correct though.

Edit: I do think that the hour and minute hands are likely original. The lume is another story.

Remember that some sellers claim a dial is original if the slab of metal is the one that came on the watch, and they aren't talking about the paint / ink.

Dials from that era are RARELY original because the materials used aged and bubbled quickly. It wasn't until the mid-50's to early 60's that better paints, inks, and clear coats were developed that sealed out moisture and therefore mold.

Thank you for the input. These are two important points.

As the second dial is from the early 1960s, I suspect that it uses a more contemporary clear coat rather than one of the older organic varnishes.

DirtyDozen12 is, as the kids say these days, "on point".

Doesn't the overlapping of the lume and hour marker indicate a fairly obvious relume on the second piece? Wouldn't the lume paint be cut sharp with register below the 10 pos? First example seems too clean, lacking patina. Criticism & corrections welcome.

Lume is applied after the sub dials have been cut. The slight overlap into the subdial seems within the tolerances of the day. If you look at the bigger picture, it's barely perceptible, if it even actually does. Micro-shots have people looking at things they normally wouldn't.

It should be noted that the case is very different and likely more desirable.
