The Moonwalkers – a journey with Tom Hanks London Light Room – field report January 2023.

Moonwalkers is a Light Room production in collaboration with and narrated by Tom Hanks.
The show is on until the 09/06/2024 and is in a nice area of London close to King's Cross station.

Specialist projectors and speakers transform an interactive space in the basement. Three walls and the floor are used and guests (maximum 200 I think) are free to walk around during the show. It runs for around an hour. There are a number of shows each day and tickets cost £25-£35. There might be family discounts etc for larger bookings.

It is a large space and a very immersive and unique experience. It is hard to describe. Hopefully the photos convey it better.

For me the vibrations and noise from the Saturn launch videos was awesome. Converting the space to ‘mission control’ for the landing (including floor projections) also gave a much better understanding of the operation and recreated a strong sense of apprehension despite, of course, knowing the outcome.

The projections of the moon were fantastic, as were the panoramas which really gave a sense of the landing zones topography and the scale of it all. It is not 3D but by using the walls and floor it creates the next best thing from 2D images.

I would have liked to see more panoramas but I imagine they are hard to create and a lot of time is also given over to explaining the history and story of the Apollo programme. Artemis and plans for future missions also get a mention. It would be nice to see a show aimed at the enthusiasts, maybe tracking every element of a generic Apollo mission and using the space to fully capture …well, space I guess :0)

I don’t think I would make an international trip just to see the show but, if you are in London, it is well worth a visit. You can stay for subsequent shows as well if you wanted to see another from a different vantage point. I don’t know if there are any plans to travel the show outside of London.

This shot would not load before but it is a nice example of the panorama effect. The room is actually a lot darker in reality (who says the camera never lies :0)
Also it is funny to see more sedate transport options so close to Kings Cross on the short walk to the Light Room. It is not all high-speed trains and rockets in the area.

Thanks for taking the time to share. Good pics, enough to make me jealous.

Thanks, hopefully it will encourage people who can make it to check it out and at least gives a flavour for people who won’t get to see it. Looking back on the pics has been helpful for me as well, in the moment it is easy to miss stuff and the graphics give a lot of useful info. The scale of the place for example. Hard to get that given the lack of features up there.

Yep, I felt my knees get weak looking at that photo. A little too close to the edge.

Thanks a lot for the nice and detailed post!
It looks amazing!
Hopefully, I will manage to go to London (again...) before they close the exhibition?
I do have some work for Mr Freese...🙄

He isn’t actually on the moon. You can totally tell.

Why would Forrest Gump be on the Moon? Shrimp fishing gone bad maybe?

Amazing pictures thanks a lot fore sharing.
