I'd say that expectations of sensitivity should be suspended when humor is involved...

Before this thread disappears, I want to again note that I completely agree with @Dan S again! And I think it’s worth the repetition.

I think the OP's heart is clearly in the right place, but I respectfully feel that his concerns are a bit exaggerated. Yes, established members should be polite, but newbies should also put more effort into learning their way around the forum before charging in with inappropriate and/or stale threads. And these dynamics are longstanding, I'm not seeing any sort of step change in behavior.

Reading between the lines from posts by some of the original OF members, I get the sense that there has always been an intention to have a less sterile and more permissive environment than one finds on other forums, which makes it much more fun IMO, but also means that people need to navigate their way through some strong personalities, just as they might need to do in the real world.

So my thread was deleted, and I awaken to find this one.

I want to thank the OP for creating this, as the intention is to bring attention to needless non-constructive replies to threads, which I truly believe are unnecessary and can be perceived as rude.

I think we can all learn from this, including myself.

For those of you saying that my thread topic give or take was ridiculous and that’s why I received the treatment that I received....

My answer is: This is a watch forum. Like I said in the original thread, I used the search feature but with no success. I don’t see how it is completely absurd that I should ask how to clean my watch, on a WATCH FORUM.

Is it okay that after I asked a “noob question” someone tells me that I don’t “have balls”?

Of course not.

Maybe I should learn to search better, or use google to find answers on this site. I agree.

Maybe some older members should stop hazing new members and replying to threads with non-constructive replies that may offend people, create a non-welcoming environment, and at the end, waste some space in the time spectrum and on the actual thread.

As I said on another thread, you can all call me crazy and say I’m playing the victim and what not. I don’t care.

I received several PMs about members telling me that the hazing is inappropriate and shouldn’t be there, and these members have been here longer than I have.

I will continue my stay on the forum, and ask questions and share answers, and will continue to stand up for what is right, as I do outside of the watch forum as well.

Thanks,

Jesus.

I’m sorry, but that’s an unfair characterization.

When my kids come to me an say, “I don’t understand,” I ask them to be specific about what they are clear about, and what’s confusing. In a similar vein, when someone drops in for the first time, and clearly asks a question that could have been easily answered by doing a modicum of research, they’re going to get a response like, “Have you tried Google?”

On the whole, I find the old-timers here quite welcoming, as long as the question isn’t overtly broad/ridiculous/really easy to answer. No one likes something like that just dumped in their laps, with the expectation that others should take the responsibility, and do all the work for them. It doesn’t fly in real life, and, understandingly so, not on this forum

More patience with each-other definitely wouldn't go astray these days. I've been posting this for so long, even back in 2013 when the members of 2011 were getting frustrated by the occasional repeated question but this site spawned out of people asking for advice and input on questions that many might deem obvious and stupid.

We've always had those questions going back over 9 years now and always will, if they frustrate you the easiest way is to simply not reply and let someone else field it, but if you have the time and want to make some new watch collectors day by helping them out, its a small thing that they will often appreciate.

With the amount of stress and pressure many are under these days try to also factor in that someone can be having a bad day and what can appear as a snarky comment may in fact be someone decompressing after going through a rough patch, that isn't to say there aren't a very small number of people who need to correct their behaviour, some of them long term but I wouldn't jump to conclusions on most.

I'm going to lock this but leave it up as the OP was both well intentioned and has a lot of good points to it.
