And i would maybe suggest the OP has some rich parents bankrolling him if still at collage with Subaru and lots of v expensive watches??
::stirthepot::馃槜

I wish! The Subaru was bought from selling my old Olds Mobile and money I had saved working for nearly four summers in high school. Of course, my parents helped out some, but I put in a considerable amount towards the car.

For college, I have some decent scholarships and I'm going in state - 90% of the loans I take out are on me (which my parents have made very clear since I started high school).

As far as the watches go, I tend to rotate them. I haven't owned all three of those Omegas at once - I buy one, wear it for a while, then sell it, and buy another.

But, hey, I guess if I come off as rich that's not the worst thing 馃榾

Edit: and to clarify, the Subaru is not a WRX. I wish it was! It is the basic, 4 cylinder, non-turbo model.

It's because my watches inspire me. When I look at my wrist I smile. It gives me confidence. I'm a college student too and I worked hard for an entire summer to save for my Aqua Terra. It's really about passion.

it's like anything else, namely, once you ''value'' a particular hobby or product, and what workmanship and quality components go into any said thing, then you are more open to 'getting it'...but if it is not of 'value' to the other person, and/or out of their budget, or they're not motivated to explore and understand, then you get that predictable, bewildered look and 'are you on crack?' response.

i have a buddy, for example, who likes high end audio and helped get me into some quality items ... his gorgeous sounding system is in the 50-70k range! his interconnects--you know those normally slim wires that connect component a to b--are instead each like thick garden hoses, and from ''transparence''...they're $5k each...so 30k on interconnects alone.

i like nice clothes and shoes...but 10 yrs ago i would have gasped 'wtf?' at forking out the moeny that I do now on labels like canali, zegna etc, as dressing well and choosing nice fabrics/workmanship wasn't important to me...and I was also ignorant of what comprises different levels of quality. (i buy on sale as I am not rich ...also because we all know about markups on all items, anywhere).

so it is all about 'valuing' something and a willingness to explore and become better educated...then you can appreciate it more.

lastly, as for watches, well as we all know, this complex passion/hobby can get REALLY expensive--and fast. the 'watch snob' (on askmen.com) stated that many people into watches really don't understand horology in depth (that's me!)...so i'll stay in the $2-5k (used) market happily remaining a neophyte only exploring the surface..i could never afford a patek or other in the 20 k-50k range....nor would i spend such...but to those who can and love it and appreciate it, that's wonderful.

Hi all,

So, I completely understand why I would and why everyone else on these forums would spend over $500 on a watch. BUT, 95% of people don't get it.

I've had plenty of people say, "Oh jeez, that's an Omega? How much was that?" Literally, every time I have told them the actual price, I'm pretty sure I hear a brick drop inside their pants, and then they say, "Whoa... Wh-wh-why would you pay so much for a watch?" And, honestly, I feel like I could only make them understand if I sat their and explained the complexity of watch movements, the history of the brand, the heritage of that particular watch, a brief rundown of luxury goods in our economy, and my view on what "overpriced" means. Do you guys feels the same way?

I don't want to make it seem as if I care that much, because I don't - it just gets a little annoying by having the uniform sh**ing bricks response when I talk about my watches with people.

I guess I just get frustrated with people, and I don't really know how to concisely make a logical statement explaining why I would pay that much for a watch. Usually, I'm just honest and I say I buy them because I love and appreciate watches, and I view them as little pieces of art that you can wear on your wrist instead of pin on your wall or display on a table (which, you could do as well if it floats your boat).

And one quick tangent on overpriced: if a good is overpriced, then very few, if no one, will buy it. Any luxury watch, be it $5,000 or $50,000, isn't overpriced if people are willingly buy it. Tell that to someone next time they say watches are overpriced 馃槈

Again, I'm not self-conscious about what people think about my watch endeavors, I'm just wondering if there is an effective response that doesn't take 20 minutes to communicate to the other person about why you enjoy expensive watches. Maybe, "because I like it" would suffice. 馃榾

I buy what I like when I can afford it or buy something that I can spend my time and energy on when I can't afford it. I am the classic "champagne taste on a beer budget guy" but I don't buy thinking about what others might like.

My favorite thing to do is to baffle 'em further with a simple and accurate response that, nonetheless, tends to sail right over their heads:

Because all fiat currencies become worthless over time, and, unlike such currencies, fine vintage watches (paintings and cars, etc.) cannot be conjured up with the stroke of a computer key.

The looks of bewilderment are priceless.

So you and me will be trading Chickens for watches after the banks collapse

That might be the case if I only had watches! Self-sufficiency is undoubtedly the safest approach, and while I can't claim to be there yet, I am much better positioned to deal with the likely post-collapse turmoil than most.

It'll actually be my fourth! I've been flipping a lot lately and so I've been experimenting with a bunch of different Omegas. As much as I love it, I may be selling it as well. I've owned an SMP 2531.80, a speedy pro 30th anniversary, an Omega SMP 150th anniversary, and the newly acquired Aqua Terra. 馃榾

that's the one i have my eye on...read recently that omega may, by 2017, make all of their watches at co-axial movements.
(if i read correctly, that is)

Well Honestly for me, I have a bevy of cheaper watches. I wanted something nice to maybe pass down in my family. If I want to risk a diver then I have my Seiko 009 and my trusty Vostok Amphibia.

There is no difference in saving up for a watch which is 1 item and buying multiple suites and shoes, and gadgets which equal to the same price. Except one will hold its value (the watch depending on model and make think Rolex, Patek etc).

My wife said, you love watches. You don't drink, you don't go to the bar, you don't buy expensive cars. It's a trade off. I could spend a ton on booze, strippers (back in the day), Vegas trips etc. but I don't. I saved up and and got me an Omega.

You should get a car the same age of the watch for better matching.
I think I'd get a new watch to match the car.....

A question I have asked myself on more than one occasion...

In all honesty, I cannot justify what has (only fairly recently) turned out to be a rather expensive passion for me. However, I don't feel I need to! I see no difference between spending extra money on a luxury watch to spending extra money on anything else, whether it be a car, a HiFi, clothes or mobile phone.

When asked "Is it real?" I respond "Nah, I doubt it. It was $100 off the market."
However, when told "Hey, that's a nice watch! Is that the [insert make and model]" I get great satisfaction from sharing my appreciation with another watch lover.

Simply put though, my watches bring me pleasure and yes, because I can! I look forward to one day handing my watches down to the next generation. I genuinely cannot think of anything else material in my life that is so personal and precious that I will be able to do the same with...

My favourite retort to a statement I am sure many you have heard:
"It's not just a watch, it is a timepiece. And it does not only tell me the time, it tells me where I am in life!" 馃檮
