·We have threads for so many things here, why not a disc golf thread? Do you play? Know someone who plays? Been hit by a disc while walking in a park? Never heard of it?
What is disc golf? It's golf but with specialized frisbees that are thrown into a basket with chains hanging down to help catch the disc. There are different discs for all types of shots. Distance drivers, fairway drivers, mid-range, and putters. It's grown a lot in popularity in the past 10-15 years with courses all over, usually in public parks where it's free to play. There are professional players making a living with tournament winnings and sponsorships. Disc golf has live coverage and sometimes highlights appear on ESPN. The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) is the organization that sanctions official tournaments, round ratings, and runs a Pro Tour. It took them about 40 years to get to 40k members and then they hit over 200k members in the past 10 years. A bit more here if you're interested. https://www.pdga.com/introduction
My story... I started playing around 2009 and quickly got into tournaments. I was obsessed. Around 2013 I burned out having been separated from my normal crew after moving for my job. Was just practicing for tournaments all the time and stopped having fun. Got into motorcycling and endurance events and just stopped playing disc golf. I came back to it last year and have been having fun playing casual rounds and started playing some local league rounds. I may play a tournament this year or maybe get back into that next year.
Go find a course and give it a try! https://www.pdga.com/course-directory
I know I saw at least one other person post a picture one time in the WRUW thread so hopefully I'm not completely alone here. And of course, some obligatory pictures. Best, Alex.
Two shots parked next to each other from 300’.
Basket in the distance.
Also an excuse to get out there in nice places.
