Victor Glover, the pilot for the Artemis 2 lunar flyby mission that brought humans farther away from Earth than ever before, has some notes on the rest of NASA’s Artemis plans. Namely, he’s urging NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman to pursue a simpler path to a crewed moon landing that would target the equatorial region instead of the particularly harsh lunar south pole.
“If you want to go fast, go familiar,” Glover said at the NASA Exploration Science Forum at Ames Research Center on July 21. “We want to get to the surface. If we want to land soon, familiar, daylight, equator.”
Part of Glover’s concerns about starting with a south pole mission, aside from the added difficulty of targeting and operating in the permanently-shadowed craters there, is crewmember safety and the ability to evacuate in case of an emergency or medical issue. The orbit required for a south pole landing may leave crewmembers without an exit plan for up to a week at a time, whereas they could make a speedier exit from the equatorial region.
“We need to be realistic and work our way to the south pole, and maybe not try to go there first,” Glover said.

I had planned to attend (even bought a close up ticket) but canceled everything couple days ago when I saw the thunder and lightning forecast. My schedule wasn't flexible enough to take a chance on delays. Looked like an excellent launch. Good for Crew 12 too, as they're ready to come home.
There's a Falcon heavy launch tonight a little before midnight. That should be another great launch.
Ah well, maybe next time.

·Yeah I keep telling myself I'll get over there. I can't remember if you said where'd you be coming from...
I don't have much of an excuse as KSC is only just a little over 3 hours.
My oldest has a school field trip there towards the end of the school year - I happily volunteered to chaperone.
Though I'm not sure how much help I will be hah.

I did a few school trips. I always got more out of it than I gave. Puts a smile on your face. Nice break from adulthood.

·Portland, Oregon. Pretty easy getting to Orlando. Cheap hotels in Titusville, plus a great BBQ spot.

I always figure worst case, I could just shoot down to Cocoa beach and make a day or two out of that.
But I also just have the option of turning around and easily going home 🤷♂️
