The Best Watch for a Teenager

At one time, 40 years ago, I kept supplying our kid with scrap watches I had returned to health.
When my father was a kid, maybe 65 years ago at this point, my grandmother worked at Timex and she'd bring back new watches for him to 'test' for periods of time. After 3 months he'd get a new one and the old one would go back to Timex to see how much damage he'd managed to do.

If you're going to go with a Vostok I'd lean toward these: https://am-diver.com/ - let the kid pick and choose the style, finish, dial, bezel colors. Plus they're nice cause you can beat the hell out of them and get replacement parts dirt cheap.

I cannot in good faith ever buy a watch from a company that would send out a watch with that movement with that style bezel.

I wore this on high school. My father gave it to me. I still wear that watch from time to time.

Not enough info.
Reason for the watch, type of life style. M/F
Could be real active, or a computer or book worm.
Also consider where they are wearing the watch.
Don't get something that is not fitting for their piers.
Ask them or take them window shopping.
Watches are really a personal item, believe me.
I spent hours at NAWCC shows looking for other people.
Never again!
As mentioned, a Seiko Automaric is a very durable watch.
They had one with a big 5 on the dial automatics.
Good luck on whatever your choice.

Why not the cheaper and identical Seiko?
Personal preference. Never liked Seiko design. A couple come close, but something about them always gives me pause. Nothing at all wrong with them.

I'm wearing one of the new SRPG models right now - the SRPG31. I actually think it's superior to the Hamilton, and a bargain - my wife was able to get it for $186 shipped. Unlike the Hamilton, it has applied metal logo, numerals, and indices. I would prefer it just be a date only, but I can live with this 😀 No wrist shot at the moment, as it is night time, but I'll try to get one up soon.

I suspect I'm closer to "kid" age than some of the posters.

I got a G-Shock as a Christmas present when I was 16. Wore that all the way through high school and paired it with a suit when I went to prom, which the internet tells me is now "cool", but it was uncool enough then that I bought a Seiko5 when the G-Shock started falling apart halfway into college.

The Seiko5's still a fine option, especially the new sports models that look like Black Bay knockoffs at 1/10th the price.

In my experience the yoof of today can’t read analogue displays (they also think that emails are for ‘oldies’).

Long story short, safest to go digital 😉 so G Shock or Baby G.

I bought a G Shock for both my oldest and youngest sons, I gave my late 60s Accutron 218 to my middle son because he really liked it, he's now looking at getting a G Shock, and I've given a Seiko 5 to an ex girlfriend's son. So I'll give a vote to both the G Shock and the Seiko 5, both are great value for the money and sturdy.

Well this will be my daughters first watch. Bought it in a small antique/trinket/tat shop this week for £20. Cartier looks down to the crown! Has a japanese quartz movement and I still have my grandfathers Lorus that has one of these and is still running after 30 years continual use. If she wears and enjoys this we can then talk about getting something a bit nicer!!
