Yeah they are quite tiny unfortunately
Not to totally derail the thread, but this is 31mm and this style strap really makes it wear more like a 34mm.
And this at 32mm on a leather Nato

That’s what kills me about the explorer and Airking- they were the simplest of the line and were once considered the “bargain” in the lineup, attainable even by someone with modest means- not anymore.
Well I guess Rolex has inched upward from premium to luxury by simply reducing supply!

Must say, that Bulova is bulked up by the beefy lugs too

And BTW- to speak to the thread, the Elgin A-11 (the top one) is a real Pilot’s watch- truly the “King” of early hack-set Pilot’s watches.

My wife and I say hello!
The blue dial was my first 'proper watch'. It was a 21st birthday present back in 1999. I bought my wife the pink dial (it's definitely not salmon!) as a wedding present. Still one of my faves.

I like that pink dial version.

Dont know if this interests you guys but here are a couple of rare white dialed Elgin A11s From 1941/2 i have. The black dialed ones came after and are the ones you generally see and associate as an American WW2 pilot’s watch.

I think the most recent air king is a fascinating piece. It’s a Rolex that does not take itself too seriously.

I tried the current air-king on recently, and I really enjoyed it for this reason. For a moment, I thought about liquidating a good chunk of my novice collection in order to buy it. My issue isn't the eccentricity of the dial - it's that so little of the dial has lume. If all the numbers had lume, like the current Explorer, I think I'd really be smitten.

Agreed. I had one for a few weeks as a trade with my brother...gave it back. I like the general design but the complete lack of lume renders it useless (especially to a pilot), and IMO the 3-6-9 should have been expressed as 15-30-45 for continuity's sake (and been fully lumed), then it would be a watch able to stand on its own merits. Just my .02 😀

My Air-King Date. Read the 1971 MSRP, and weep. Not currently on my wrist.
Lovely to see someone else appreciate the Airking Date
