Should clean up nicely. And maybe not a steal at $5200 given the work ahead (not running) ...the dial looks fantastic, not to mention the DON.

The dial is truly fantastic, and the missing /damaged parts (even those potentially in the movement) are readily available. Decent pickup at that price, though whatever that road rash is at 11 o'clock is a bit concerning, if it's on the bezel....

Well, yeah I mean... even if the dial has no damage (which is a gamble with this plexi)
Crown, pushers, plexi are all for the trash.
DON looks pretty ok and has value.
Hands lume looks like shit and doesn't match.
No bracelet?

Too rich for me, but good to know if I ever want to sell mine.

 

The buyer (not me) have 2 weeks to regret, so no gamble at all....

 

For me, we can t see the real condition of this dial with a glass like that.
I really think there are missing paint around the dial on little minute track, even maybe the "s" of speedmaster is damage.

5200 usd !!
-Middle case poor condition due to the back of one lug
- missing seahorse tail due to an over polished caseback.
- pusher missing, maybe for a long time and movement may have rust .....
Just one thing interesting the bezel.
It is "just" a 145022 reference and for me 5200 usd is a really high risk price.

 

Sorry, but far from being a "Steal" IMO.
This watch looks like it's been in a car accident.

Yeah, the buyer might get a nice dial and an average DON, but what about the rest? (as already been mentioned by other members).

-Hands are ugly.
-Plexi is junk.
-No pushers.
-Chewed up crown.
-Soft caseback logo.
-Caseband all dinged and dented.
-Junk bracelet.
-For sure will need a service.

I think if you add all the costs of restoring this watch, buyer will still be underwater when it comes to current market value. (And I'm not even mentioning adding a ~$1,200 1039 bracelet & a $750 pair of 516 Endlinks...).

The buyer of this lot clearly got caught up in the auction hype and lost all common sense when buying this piece.

If I've learned anything on OF, it's don't let a bad crystal fuzz-up your dial radar.

Like so much else, subjective. The dial looks way above average (to me), the hands look fine. Definitely not horrible (to me). Didn’t study the case too closely so I won’t speak to that.

And sure, the crystal will need to be changed, but this is basically free in the context of the A-Z overhaul this watch will need, ...the cost of which you are spot on about. But hey, then the watch is also fully serviced. So I think the buyer comes out OK...provided there are no serious surprises in wait. Which there could totally be. The watch is rough. So not without risk.

I got a PM from the anonymous winner, ...so with his permission I might eventually report back on how this one turned out. I’m optimistic.

But let's see how this plays out. Prices are truly going mad.
2-3 years ago I wouldn't have touched this with a 5 feet pole for this price. Is the final price stated on the auction site with or without buyers fee's?
