It's a rare occurrence when Bob and I disagree, but in this case, if it is considered to be in poor taste to include a particular category of people as the subject of jokes, is the resulting slope not extremely slippery? Who should decide which categories are acceptable, and which are not? Is it not dubious to attempt to "protect" the subjects of jokes, when the premise of them is obviously absurd, such as the ones above (and below)? Etc.

You’re right, of course. It is a slippery slope, that can devolve into censorship. The above jokes weren’t really in bad taste (well, the kid in the bottle, perhaps…), but we all bring a unique perspective to what we find funny, based on our life experiences.

I have personally known a few young children that have died tragically, so I’m probably a bit sensitized to that genre of jokes. That said: there is probably a consensus of jokes that most laugh at, and a bunch that many will find in poor taste.
