Just thought I would share this experience

I bought this 1935 26.5 and was pleased with its looks on arrival, however on winding it proceeded to run and gain about 13 mins per hour, yes , per hour. Contacted the seller and arranged to return it for a refund, then he offered a partial refund if I wanted to keep it, which I decided to do. I read up on the possible causes, and though no watch repairer, decided to have a go

First, removed the balance assembly and let it sit in lighter fluid for 10 mins and an hour to dry, put it back, and there was no difference.

Then passed the watch over the (basic) demagnetiser I use for screwdrivers, no change

Then removed the balance again, put it in a small plastic container with some foam padding, again to the demagnetiser, refitted and let it run for 2 hours, it was now running OK, refitted the case back and an hour later it had gained over 10 mins.

Scratched head

I demagnetised the Stainless Steel case back, refitted it, and observed.

After 12 hours it had lost about 1 minute, it has remained at a small loss now for 48 hours

When I was at school, about 14 years after Omega made the watch, stainless steel was not magnetic.

I am a happy chappie but wonder what had caused the issue, if anyone can shed light it would be appreciated
