I saw that too, I went to £1500 but wasn't prepared to gamble further as they would take the case back off and for all I knew it could have a cheap quartz movement in it (not that thats likely I know)! Looks like a 105003 OR 2998 with service bezel and service dial, later hands also maybe! What intrigued me was the dial, its not T swiss T but it looks like its led quite a life of been aged to look likes its led quite a life, who knows? looking at the lume it looks like it been owned by someone who smokes 100 a day but I guess it can only be a luminova dial????

What did it hammer for in the end?

I think 3.5k GBP plus commission. I was out at around the same as you. The dial I couldn't work out at all, but I put that down to being a relative newbie to Speedmasters. I was guessing 105003 with service bezel and later hands too.

Testament to the insanity around speedies at the minute, a parts bin project watch that at best has been owned by the same person all its life and very poorly cared for and worst cobbled together for spares fetching as much as a sorted and very sharp 105.003 two years ago! nuts!

Mercenary as it sounds I would have bought it and broken it up for spares and parts so lucky I didn't go all in otherwise I would have been holding the baby right now ;)

The irony of this sale is whilst Ed White prices have strengthen there is an almost museum quality Ed White for sale recently on another forum for the sale price as this bag of parts hammered for plus the commission. Thats the beauty of auctions

No but I have one which is actually nicer and never restored or refinished

That one was for sale on another forum late late last year for £400 more than the hammer went down on the parts bin tonight!

Although many forum members (including myself) have benefited enormously for the horrendous price increases its a shame that for collectors wanting to get in to early speedies etc that they now can't because they have been priced out of the market
