Such sad news. He was a gem.
I saw Sir Stirling at Lime Rock, and appropriately driving a Maserati 250F monoposto. It was at an early Vintage Fall Festival, and it was clear he was enjoying himself out on track.
After Sir Sterling’s race session, he entered the pits and immediately removed his helmet and goggles. He was instantly recognizable by many as he rumbled into the pits in the 250, with a very business-like look on his face. He was dipping the clutch to avoid hitting some of the less aware pedestrians wandering about in the middle of the lanes. The Lime Rock Pits were still packed gravel at that time, and the light-switch in/out action of the clutch caused the rear tires to spin and leave trails of lose gravel behind the Maserati at each engagement.
My oldest son - probably about 8 or 9 years old then- and I both seemed to recognize the importance of that moment in time seeing him, and how much he apparently enjoyed driving the Maserati.
Godspeed, Sir Stirling
