Not something seen everyday , Spitfire on show at our local park today . Closest I've ever been to the most amazing aircraft in my life .
Didn't know much about the aircraft till I saw the movie Dunkirk. Made me research on the place a bit and a few documentaries helped as well. Loved the history behind this one. Beautiful machine as well.
Alternatively if you ever go into Cornwall there’s a Spitfire in someone’s garden a couple of miles from Newquay Airport. I kid you not!
As I spy a Royal British Legion tent in the background I'm guessing you're in GB and was this a fly-in visit by the Spit?
A nice replica in the town of Moffat - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/south_of_scotland/7941411.stm
Here’s the one close to Newquay airport Found it by mistake when there on holiday a couple of years back
If possible, you need to attend the Duxford Air Show. I was able to go several years ago. I bet they had a dozen Spitfires flying. They also had a Rolls Royce Merlin running on an engine stand. I could feel it in my bones!
Legendary machine, sadly there aren’t too many left that are in flying condition (54 according to Wikipedia, and only 4 Mk 1s). I was lucky enough to go to school not far from RAF Northolt, and every Rememberance Day at lunchtime would get to see a Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster fly over on their way to the city. I remember the distinctive sound most of all; it must have been incredible to see and hear a squadron flying overhead.
Anyone seen the exact model of clock fitted to an actual spitfire? It's probably this LeCoultre but it would be interesting to see one in situ?
Different models had different clocks. This appears to be a Smiths from a Spitfire MK III. The MK IIIb was similar but was 24 hours not 12.
