I saw a Speedmaster for sale on another forum with an applied logo on the dial listed as a 1969 model. 145.022.69ST was embossed inside the caseback however its serial number was 3059XXXX which according to Roman Hartmann's chart indicates the watch was produced between 1970 & 1971. The caseback was engraved with the first watch on the moon inscription. I was under the impression that the "transitional" models were produced between 1968 & 1969 had applied logos on the dial & pre-moon casebacks without any inscription. The watch was fitted with a 1039 bracelet, I was under the impression that the watches were being supplied with the 1171 bracelet during that period.
Most likely a replacement dial. Serial number and bracelet correspond with a 145.022.69. The 1171 wasn't used before 1972 I believe.
AFAIK, no one can say "definitely" about certain parts on so-called "transitional" examples. The transition time period for these Speedies is fuzzy on both ends.
I think I can pretty definite about what I want to see on a watch I would be prepared to buy, calling itself a transitional: -68 back or -69 Low serial number, 27m or 28m Applied metal logo on dial Long indices on hour markers dot over 90 bezel.
