Wait a minute? Didn’t Bukowskis auction a CK2915 before for a record price? Yes they did, and we reported about it here. We also published an interview with the collector who bought that CK2915-1 for a whopping $275,508 US dollars (including buyer’s premium). You can read that interview here. Speedmaster CK2915-2 So now, it is time for […]

Let’s see. If the condition is good, It should reach high levels. We have seen this in Geneva last year, collectors don’t pay new record prices for medium quality.

Agree.

But this has impeccable "Barn Find" provenance.

It always amuses me to see the BF premium paid, and then the object in question is immediately devalued a little by the very fact of the new ownership. If that new owner then works on the object, it loses all of its Barn Find premium.

We collectors are all mad.

The very best would go for 120-150k (GBP) - original parts, good condition, no re-touches and original bracelet.

I think the -3\s which are rarest (may be wrong on that) or ones that have been owned by certain people may fetch 200k

75k is fairly low for a CK2915 but the place of sale can also play a big part, as well as the promo.

Having had time to think and review the sale, I think the seller and the auction house rushed this watch to market.

Most of the watches that sold at this auction sold over estimate, the speedmasters were noticeably under - but they were all just a little bit off.

I do think the 2915 would have done better at a bigger house. Or even a private sale. This watch was simply not marketed.

Indeed! Even the Fratello bump came too late in the game.
Not sure why the rush, but this is still a good chunk of money. Hope the seller is still happy...

Not disagreeing with you at all, but what was the community wrong about? The course of action was probably the best one. The execution, that is rushing into it, was perhaps not the optimum one.

The real question is whether the buyer is on OF!!!

Honest question, not being a smartass: I often wonder, what do the majority of people who spend this type of money (or even more as we've seen with other examples) on 60-year-old watches actually do with them once they have in-hand? Would you actually wear a Speedmaster like this, or does it just get displayed in a collection, or what?

I guess you can ask why do people buy super cars, private jets or luxury boats... Simply to enjoy them (piece of history, rarity or simply because mere mortals cannot afford them) or to show off their wealth.

Many many reasons to go into why collectors spend money on this but I hope it answered your question

Obviously. Except in the case of expensive vintage watches, I simply wonder if people actually wear them, or they just put them in a safe and look at them twice a year.

I have a good friend w 8 figures in watches and he wears them all. I am sure there are plenty of big collections that sit in safes and cases as well
