    Hi

I am looking for a vintage Speedy and was offered this one. Its from -77 and has the box, papers and manuals. Completely original according to the seller. Not the best pics I am afraid.

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg He wants $ 2800 for it. Its that a decent prize or should I wait for a better deal? Its really a jungle out there and this looked to me pretty legit.

    thanks

    Peter

I would say thats very expensive for a 1977 Speedmaster

You can buy a nearly new 3570.50 Speedmaster for that price, Kringkily is selling one and has a very good reputation for selling Speedmasters

Here's how this watch thing has worked for me: No Matter what you pay there will be a better piece at a cheaper price that will come up for sale within 72hours of purchase. Like all education, it costs you money. Learning your way around this watch thing will cost you. Buy what you will enjoy. For that money I would look for something earlier with a step dial, that little step adds so much dimension.

It is a 1800-2200 watch, with all complete box and papers add few hundred more.
If you are looking for birth year watch, it is not bad idea to have a complete set like that. Of course after negotiate with the seller.
If you are just looking for vintage speedy watch, that kind of money could get you nice condition transitional Speedy. (1968-1969 with applied logo)

Thank you very much for your answers. I'll go for another watch. Its not a yearwatch, that would be a -63 and would probably cost me a kidney and some change :)

actually, you could get a -63 105.003 or 105.012 for a very decent price. $3K-$4K for an .012, and about $500-$1000 more for a .003. If you want it, go for it!!

you said you were looking for a "vintage Speedy"; the big step in the Speedy family is calibre 321, and calibre 861/1861. Calibre 321 Speedies were made 1957 - 1968*; Calibre 861 was made from 1969 - 1995, with the movement being updated the 1861 in 1996.

*even though many "145.012-67" cal 321 Speedies were built in 1968, the caseback inside on those will still be stamped "145.012-67". Anything with a -68 or later on the caseback will be a calibre 861 Speedy.

    Good luck!

Not to mention what a DON adds. I know that Mickey loves his version ;-)

Peter - IMHO, I understand this as one seller attempting to draw someone into a purchase which may seem to some (I'm on the fence as to value since I've been searching and researching 1960s Speedies) a bit on the expensive side. 1960 Vintage Speedmasters seem to be fetching higher prices and it could be that this seller hopes to get in on it.

Again, IMHO as a noobie, that price seems a bit high. You could be setting a new level for a 1970s model?

Do more research - Best to search here. See if any similar examples show up and at what price range.

Despite what the web site may say, it is now gone - I just spoke to the jewellers. I had my details into the website within minutes of Neil's posts, but unfortunately they don't accept international cards apparently (not that this prevents their website from making multiple transaction attempts and causing all sorts of fun with my bank this afternoon )...

Sorry about that. I was the one who grabbed it. I've not owned one before and most of what I've got is in the 30mm range and smaller, so if it comes in and I don't like it on the wrist I'll give you a heads up when I send it back.

No problem at all. I'd probably have beaten you to it, had they accepted my credit card, but it seems they didn't want my money!

Apparently they didn't want my money either. After a few days of no response to my email inquiry about shipping, today I received an email that stated, among other things, that they had sold the watch "a couple days prior to your purchase." B.S. of course. The hunt continues.

That store has system problems for over a week and couldn't update their site during that time. Good store and I've done a few transactions with them.
