A big reason why brands increase prices is because they are constantly innovating.

Have to heartily disagree with this. The only reason brands increase prices is because they've surmised that they can make more profit from the added revenue of the price increase vs the business lost from the price increase

Supply and demand at it's basest level. The only reason these brands do R&D is to increase their perceived value of the item they're selling, either through measurable improvements or intangible benefits, and hopefully creating enough of a return on investment through raising per unit profit or increased sales volume.

That being said, these are toys for boys and if the hobby gets too expensive it really shouldn't make anyone too butthurt. I remember when one of my dad's friends who used to buy, fix up and sell for cost air-cooled Porsche's stepped away from that gambit because the cost of entry increased exponentially - he didn't cry over it, he simply moved on.

pans out?

how do you think it's going to pan out. it will be a win/win. rolex is playing us like a fiddle and people eat it up. they can't get something they want, they want it more. raise the price, better get it before the next increase or you'll never get one. etc, etc...

can't wait for rolex to do their vintage series, that will be pandemonium. rolex is a puppet master in behavioral science and the world is their puppet.

rolex drives the market and can do anything they want and they'll come out smelling like a rose.. now it's going to be more expensive and the people that just got in on the lower price will be all smiles. congrats's your stock just split reassuring buyers that buying a rolex is smart.

people that are buying these watches will be detoured by 5-8% ..crap..i remember in 2003 when you could buy a sub for around 3k and that was considered high

Exactly! Rolex can't make enough stainless steel watches to full demand. The shortages are so severe and demand so crazy that folks are paying 50% to 100% premiums on the gray market to get the latest hotness now. For every person that says he's out of the Rolex game there are 10 more willing to take his place.

The standard speedmaster is more or less unchanged in 50 years.

Two words : Veblen goods.

R&D costs have nothing to do with it. Marketing costs, maybe.

that's part of it. rolex has a great brand image. not to mention they make a great product.

the psychology on how certain brands are perceived better or greater than similar products is fascinating.

but back to omega. they obv don't have the same marketing plan as rolex, but they have an iconic watch in the speedmaster which is more or less affordable compared to other luxury watches

You have to choose to be "played like a fiddle".

There are people (me included) who think the watches are dull, and the bullshit spectacular, so choose to ignore what the brand has to say about itself.

Omegas forays into similar behaviour is leading me to feel the same way.

They can, but they choose not to.

Two more words: Spot on

I'm sure if you want to pay your local AD or OB and extra 10% they would be happy to take it from you.

You have to choose to be "played like a fiddle".

Exactly.

But they do NOT discount the manual-wind Speedmaster moonwatch because they can sell every one they get at full price. They rarely have more than one in stock at any time, and several times when I’ve browsed, none at all.
Got my Speedy hesalite with 30% discount on a tax free price (paid around 2600e exactly 1year ago) from my OB and bought 3, for me and two good friends who were chasing one... They had more in stock.

Yep, I'd say that paying full price for a Speedmaster at an AD is a pretty rare thing to do. It should be possible to get a 15-20% discount.

30% off an OB is unheard of. That's hell a lot more than ADs. I will need to try harder next time i buy from my OB.

To this day, the Speedy remains one of the most affordable options to step into the world of iconic watch designs.

I've considered dipping a toe in Rolex ownership with a no-date Submariner. If Rolex maintains such a great brand image then they certainly have a funny way of burnishing it lately.

Bit off-putting. I'm too geezerly and out-of-tune to be played like a fiddle.

Because that First Man tie-in sure ain't gonna pay for itself.
