Speedmaster versus Planet Ocean - which to add to collection?

I admire your well thought out research to this dilemma. My first omega was a Speedy 311.30.42.30.01.006. For me it was a no brainer to get a PO as my next Omega. Then came the Aqua Terras and some limited editions and various others that I fell in love with over the years. If you know for a fact that this next purchase will be your last one then I would go for a more rounded out collection and pull the trigger on the Speedy. Somehow I doubt this will be your last watch for while as this addiction takes hold of your soul and never lets go! Good luck !

Yes, you got that right. It does turn into an addiction. An honestly, I doubt my next purchase will be my last. But I am trying to just enjoy the pursuit versus letting it get out of control. There's a fine line between enjoyable and allowing any collection to become stressful (financially) because you buy too much at one time. But I do see getting a Speedy next. My dilemma will then be trying to decide whether to get one of the remaining former models or going with the new 3861 movement. Of course, quite a bit of price jump on the new one.

matching the Speedmaster with either Omega diver is the way to go.

My dilemma

If you are not into the COSC certified reference or that it is not a distinguishing factor to you, I would suggest the 1863 movement. As both 1863 and 3861 are almost identical, other than the COSC certification. In my honest opinion, the 1863 movement brings a more neo-vintage charm and less harmful to your wallet, while at the same time satisfying the itch.

Not really...there are significant differences in these movement besides COSC and METAS certification. The biggest being that the 3861 has a co-axial escapement, but there are many other differences as well.

Apologies for my lack of research on the differences. 🙁

To me, the watches, in general, are largely similar to each other. Other than the upgrade in performance and certifications etc, as you have pointed out.

it's a lot of money for a manual winding watch
I was primarily factoring on the price point for both watches, to come up with my suggestion. 😀

Yes, I've got the black rubber strap (with white accents) on order for the black dial/bezel PO. I like it on the bracelet (lots of wrist presence), but also interested to see how it will look on the rubber. And, no doubt, would be much lighter. The PO is a tall watch for sure. But it seems to work on my 7.25 inch wrist.

I am glad though, that I opted for the all black dial/bezel versus the one with the orange accents. The orange one really spoke to me at first. But then I became concerned thinking about how I might like it several years down the road.
I tried that colour combination on too.

I’d say you’ve got to really love that particular design and colour combination to own that PO in the long-term.

I’ve seen many of these pre-owned examples pop up for sale on various watch forums, eBay, Chrono24, etc.

I imagine there’s been a fair bit of buyers remorse experienced on that version of the PO 43.5mm. It’s an acquired taste!

I own a SMP 300m on white dial with bracelet and black rubber strap. Great watch. But I want to add a second Omega timepiece and I'm undecided. I have looked at the "big brother" (so to speak) of the SMP - namely the Planet Ocean; and I could really see myself owning the PO along with the SMP 300m (even though it seems a bit chunky). They are different enough from each other to work; and the PO is a great looking watch with an excellent bracelet and rubber strap options where I can make it very distinctive from my existing SMP 300m. I really like the Seamaster watches a lot!

That being said, I've recently started looking at the Speedmaster Moonwatch. If I go this route, (just me) I would prefer the sapphire over the hesalite. But I've noticed there's now a waitlist for the old 1863 movement, reference number 311.30.42.30.01.006. It looks like now, the 3861 movement, master chronometer certified, reference number 310.30.42.50.01.002 is the new edition. It appears this was a recent upgrade to the Speedy; and of course the new price tag to go along with it. The Speedy never really struck me so much at first. But the more I look at its complications as a chronograph; I think I could really appreciate it in my small collection; and it's certainly very iconic with its history!

It goes without saying the PO and Speedy are very different watches from Omega; and I am on the fence about which way to go. I will say one thing that concerns me with the Speedmaster is the fact that it does not appear to have the quick easy micro-adjust feature on the bracelet clasp like the Seamaster models. On the other hand, I think the PO is a bit chunky, although I still think it could work on my 7.25 inch wrist. Perhaps, the chunkiness is the biggest issue with the PO and the Speedy's bracelet without a nice quick adjust on the clasp would be one of it's biggest negatives.

Once I pull the trigger, I don't expect to be buying a third piece for a long time. And while these things are personal decisions, more than anything - I am just looking for advice (perspective) here from others. Perhaps there other factors that I should think about? Thanks for any replies here.

I also have a similar question. I am a big fan of diver watches, my first one was the 43.5 PO (8900 movement), always loved Omega so this was a big deal for me, since then I have the newer model 300m in blue and new model Tudor pelagos in black.. yeah I know they are all the same type of watch being divers - but different enough - especially the Tudor being matte black and titanium.

so lately I have been really digging chromo's and the new 3861 model of the Moon watch.. whats the opinion and consensus on trading the PO towards the moon watch.. I get really close to doing it - then put this on and im really torn, the PO 8900 is such a good overall watch despite its weight and size on my smaller wrist.. then there are the new speed master 57's in those new colors that are amazing but out of touch right now.. ughh what to do
