Speedmaster professional chronograph issue

Hi there, I bought a new Speedmaster professional Saturday and the chronograph has not been working correctly. It is stopping at 58 seconds, when I press the start button again, the second hand moves and when I press it again it runs. Obviously this seems to be not right. If I do a full wind the chronograph works fine but within 2/3 hours the issue persists. I am new to the forum and I apologise if a similar thread exists. Would anyone have any advice/ have seen a similar issue? Thanks

Is it a 1861 or 3861 cal, are you sure it was fully wound?

It is a 3861. When I wind it, I do so until the clicking stops so I presume it’s fully wound.

Several threads on this if you just Google "Omega 3861 issues." including a 20+ page thread here. You seem to have the problem.

Use your warranty and send it back for repair.

"Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to Omega we go". It has the dreaded '3861 issue', take it back to Omega for repair under warranty.

Seeing as you just bought it, you may be able to get it exchanged rather than remain watchless for a month.

The 3861 I bought last week did something quite odd the first time I used the chronograph. it seemed like the second hand jumped ahead a couple of seconds, paused for a beat, and then continued. I started, stopped and reset it a few times, and it did it again. I gave it a full wind and have let the chrono run for a day, and have run it through dozens of times now and it's working perfectly. I came very close to taking it right back to the store, but hopefully it was just because it hadn't been used before and needed to be broken in. It's keeping amazing time, -3 seconds after six days.

Update: brought the watch back to AD. they were super nice and replaced it. Said they hadn’t seen or heard about the issue. Currently running the chrono on my new one and now and it is running smoothly. Fingers crossed. I wonder will the anxiety when running the chrono ever diminish.

Same issue. Chrono stopping and killing the watch. Full wind only lasting 6-8 hours.
Ouch, lightning struck twice.

This is not exactly abnormal. It’s a friction setting in the movement. If it continues to happen it needs an adjustment.

Geez, my 145.022-71 with the 861 is looking pretty good to me right about now. 50 years old and still runs flawlessly and keeps great time.

Are you fully winding the watch? It doesn't sound like it. Never had any Speedmaster which didn't run 48 to 52 hours on a full wind.

And my 2 1/2 year old 3861 is still running perfectly with over 60 hour power reserve.

I suspect your issues stem from not winding your watch fully. Are you winding it until the crown hits a hard stop and won't turn anymore? If not you aren't fully winding it.

Update: second watch gone back.
Well, at least now they know the issue.

I'm sorry to hear about this, very unlucky to have this happened to you 2 watches in a row.

I have been reading so too many mishaps lately with 3861 owners with issues with their watches, it's really deterring me from getting one myself.

I know there are also 3861 owners with no issues whatsoever. But I don't want to purchase one, having these issues and being without the watch for a few months. This happened to me with another brand just a few weeks after I bought the watch, ended up being in repair for months. So I know how you feel Andrew, at least the AD is nice enough to exchange the watch.

I'm slightly suspicious when you say you wind 'until the clicking stops'. When I fully wind my 3861 the clicking doesn't stop. The fully-wound condition is reached only when the winder hits a stop and won't turn any further (using gentle force). Like Evitzee, above, I'm wondering if there's something else going on the watch isn't being fully wound.

Stan.
