For sale is my 1968 Omega Speedmaster Professional, reference 145.022-68 ST, better known among Speedmaster collectors as the “transitional” model.

This is a special reference in the Speedmaster line. The 145.022-68 sits between two eras: it has much of the vintage visual charm of the earlier Calibre 321 Speedmasters, including the applied metal Omega logo, stepped dial, long hour markers, pre-Moon caseback and DON-style bezel, but it is powered by the Calibre 861 movement that would define the Speedmaster Professional for decades afterward.

That combination is what makes the 68 transitional so appealing. It still has the warm, old Speedmaster look, but with the practicality and serviceability of the 861 movement.

This example has exactly the kind of honest vintage character that I like in a Speedmaster. The dial has aged beautifully, with warm, creamy lume and a very attractive overall tone. The case shows normal wear from age and use, with scratches and marks visible in the photos. I have made no attempt to hide the condition - the photos are clear and form part of the description.

The inside caseback is stamped 145.022-68 ST, and the movement is signed Omega Cal. 861. The watch is currently fitted to an Omega 1116 bracelet with 19 links and 575 end links.

During my ownership, I have had the watch serviced twice. The most recent service was done during the COVID period by Omega Forums’ own Mr. Archer. The watch is running, and the chronograph starts, stops, and resets properly.

A few collector notes based on the watch and photos:

  • 145.022-68 ST caseback
  • Omega Calibre 861 manual-wind movement
  • Applied metal Omega logo dial
  • Stepped Professional dial
  • Warm aged tritium lume
  • Pre-Moon hippocampus caseback
  • DON-style tachymetre bezel
  • Omega 1116 bracelet with 575 end links
Please study the photos carefully and make your own assessment, especially as vintage Speedmasters are all about the details.
