Speedmaster Professional 3861 - Smellier than other watches?

I know this is a strange and somewhat silly question, but I wanted to see if other forum members have found that the 3861 Speedmaster Professional (Ref. 310.30.42.50.01.001) starts to smell dirty quicker than other watches.

In my experience (as a bit of an obsessive cleaner, very tidy, and generally very sensitive to smells), my Moonwatch develops a distinctive odor much sooner compared to my older Omegas (1960s Constellations and Seamaster) or my Rolex Submariner. Has anyone else noticed this?

On bracelet or strap? Used identically to the other watch you’re comparing to (more or less)?

I usually wear all my watches on bracelets, so the bracelet is the comparing meter. Yes, more or less same time on my wrist, same place and same conditions.

Uhh I've had no issues with my 3861 bracelet but I guess it does have larger gaps between links compared to my other bracelets. So more space for stuff to build up..?

I don't know but considering all the answers maybe it's just my problem...

May not be just “your problem”- I have a friend to is a “super smeller” as in she has a very heightened sense of smell and taste- it’s actually not a fun experience for her as she has to eat fairly bland foods and can’t be in most public places where heavy fragrances are used.

Is the smell on your wrist after wearing or the watch itself? Do you get a rash or have any irritation? Could be a reaction with your skin’s ph and the specific metals used in the stainless for that model as opposed to other watch you wear (more/less nickel or chromium than others). The case back and bracelet will most likely be a different compound- so it may be worth wearing it on a strap or another bracelet (like an Uncle Seiko) to see if the problem resolves. If so, then by process of elimination it’s a reaction to the steel in the bracelet.

Please describe the odor. Is it like a rusty metallic smell or like a booty stank?

This is starting to sound like you may want to make another thread for name my kink without naming my kink.

Yes, I would say I’m more odour sensible than the average Joe…

Great advice, I’ve worn it with the Omega NASA strap in the past (same season, same conditions) but a bit of metallic smell is always present both on the case, (bracelet when worn with it) and wrist… no rash or irritations on the wrist as well… I’ll try again and I’ll be more scientific with the results! No booty stank fortunately!

I’ve opened this thread since it’s the first time I have such problem with a watch and I used to wear all kind of questionable metal quality such as Vostoks, Pobedas, etc…
I’m just curious if there is another Omega enthusiast and Moonwatch owner that experienced some reaction with the metal of the watch 😀

Have the oils and greases gone rancid in your watch or have some organic matter gotten in there?

Also how many people are smelling their watches around the world now? 😀

I had a rotting apple smell in my car, it was awful- but nobody else really smelled it that much- faintly they would say. I tore my car apart thinking an apple rolled out of a grocery bag but no dice. Then I had flies in my car- and that was it! Took it to my mechanic and he found a dead mouse up in the heater box. I guess I’m pretty sensitive to the smell of decomp.

I am pretty sensitive to some smells. It’s kind of annoying. Especially any kind of synthetic fragrance, which are used everywhere. Anyhow just wanted to point out that usually “super smellers” are sensitive to just some smells, not all smells. So it’s different smell sensitivities with different people.
If you are noticing something, I doubt you are imaging it, but it could be something that just you are very sensitive to. I think experimenting with different straps/bracelets is a good idea. Hope you figure it out.

Smelly watch? I have next to no sense of smell left due to an industrial accident (chlorine gas leak) So if it bothers you, give it to me I probably won't notice anything as I wear it, other than a sense of being fortunate to have had the accident!

No dead mice or organic matter in my watch as far as I know... still I'll try to be more scientific and test SS bracelet vs strap in the same conditions for the same amount of time.

Today I've kept thinking about past experiences with watches and skin reaction and I had a similar experience with a Chronograph from the early 50s that had a gold case back... considering this probably I'm more sensitive to certain materials on my wrist
