This is a great idea, perfectly executed.

It would be nice to have an inlay that had spaces for spare straps, tools, etc. as well as half a dozen or so watches. Has anyone seen anything like this?

Well in regard of MisterChrono, everything they make is bespoke, so if you want a tray on top for strap (this should fit underneath the top lid, that's should be possible.

Can anyone tell me the dimensions of the inner part of the Moonwatch box without the original inlay inserted?

Yes ofcourse, width 295 mm, 202 mm depth, 65 mm high.
But it's probably best to measure the Moonwatch box you have, as there might be some minor deviations.

Well if you really like the looks but want to keep the box that comes with your Speedy as it is, you can also buy a second one. I did the same. They are available at any Omega AD or OB (if not, they can order them) because Omega has produced many extra for clients who want this particular box. You can find them at Ebay as well.

this is soo cool. i think it is completely crazy how big this case is for a single watch. it is soo big that you have to store it in your attic or basement or you convert it into something way more useful!

Very nice! I will try to do the same with a black insert from the cheaper 12 watch boxes that are sold in Amazon or Ebay 😀

Looks great. I wonder if you could do this with the normal wood boxes. It looks like it could already hold 3 maybe just 3 pillows and keep the inlay or maybe they make an inlay that would fit.

Well MisterChrono and many other bespoke watch box makers can do this job for you. Might be worth a try. But what normal wood boxes are you talking about? Like the Olympics boxes?

Like this it displays one but the top comes off and I see three openings. Maybe just need 3 cream pillows for a quick one or you get an entire insert. Would really only hold 3 maybe 4 but better than just colecting dust

Anybody know someone reputable State side that I can send my box to for modifications?

I got in touch with MisterChrono but they want me to ship the watch to Singapore, shipping alone back and forth is 1/2 of the cost to make this modification.

Why do they want you to ship the box to them? They can deliver an insert for the former Moonwatch box that fits perfectly.

I want to make more modifications other than just a tray insert.

Finally came around putting the lining on the inside of the box. They delivered a large piece of the fabric to do it myself, as they only deliver the inlay (they can do it for you but you have to send it in as mentioned in the previous post. When removing the inlay you could see the unfinished part of the Watch box and I wanted to cover it up. So this was the best I could do lol.

Hi guys, this might have been discussed before, but I couldn't find an old thread. When I first posted about this, some of you guys really wanted to know what it was. So here we go.

The big bulky box of the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch was just gathering dust, so I decided to turn it into a Speedmaster watch box. I stripped the box of the original inlay, which is just a bunch of cardboard layers and thin black lining and ordered a bespoke tray from MisterChrono (Hong Kong, but also delivers from Paris). The package arrived today, on Speedy Tuesday, so I guess it was meant to be ;-). It's a perfect fit and I love it!

If you are very very very careful, you can remove the original Omega inlay but it's very fragile and I don't know if it will look good when you put it back. But then again, each year around thousands of these boxes are sold (part of the current Speedmaster Pro package) so it will never be collectible and I don't get the point of that box anyway (apart from that it looks nice). Anyway, as I didn't know how it would turn out, I ordered another Moonwatch box at my AD.

The quality of the MisterChrono tray is very good, feels very solid and is very heavy. The cushions are large and the depth of each tray compartment is sufficient. A Speedmaster on a strap or a bracelet will not stick out. A 42mm Speedmaster is a tight fit though, so larger Speedmasters will not fit probably. It comes with a large soft cover which you can put on top of the tray, for maximum protection. By the way, my wrists are 18 cm and my Speedmasters on bracelet were a very tight fit around the cushion, so keep this in mind. If you have smaller wrists, be sure to order smaller ones. Update: Pierre-Yves of MisterChrono contacted me today (13 feb) that he will deliver another set of bespoke watch cushions, made to my specifications. Great service!

So here's my verdict:

+++ Perfect fit
+++ Solid / heavy / well constructed
+++ 42mm Speedmasters fit like a glove
+++ Comes with protective cover
+++ Tray is removable; very handy
+++ Very friendly customer service of MisterChrono ([email protected])

--- Expensive (330 euro for just the tray; including shipping)
--- When removing original Omega inlay, you might not be able to put it back properly (very weak cardboard construction). Not really has anything to do with this tray ofcourse, but with the concept.
--- Protective cover slightly too big, so you need to place it perfectly on the tray, otherwise the box will not close properly

Original Omega inlay (didn't want to keep it, so you might be able to do a much better job)
That's genuinely awesome

Good to know that the watch box purists that won't buy a watch without its box can still get what they want.
