Speedmaster Mark II Racing - question

I own one of the aforementioned watches that has had some remedial work done it in the past. My question orients around the case. It has had some, not much, polishing done to the case by STS a number of years ago. As such the edges are not 100% sharp. What would your advice be - should I find an expert to polish to get back the sharp edges/clean lines and retain the starburst effect or should I just keep as is?

Hi,

I think pictures of the case would help all of us to give you an opinion.

kind regards Max

It's absolutely down to you, really. If you're preping it for sale then unless it's awful, less is more IMHO, i.e. leave it alone. But if you're wearing it and it bugs you, then have it done. I'm surprised STS didn't bring it back to as-sold, as they are pretty good (depends on the condition before and what they were asked to do, of course). My eyes always go to the dial on mine so I ignore the case scratches, but a restored barrel case can look amazing. Some photos would help. Cheers.

Yes I can see your concern. The case has definitely lost the edges which on this watch are what makes the case look so interesting. If you want it restored then you need to talk to some real pros. You could send it to Omega and see what there advice is. Send photos to independents and see how they might do the job. Seems like STS would have been able to maintain the edges but i believe you need special equipment to hold the case and maintain the edge. Going to need to talk to some case restoration experts.

This is how a restored case can look like
This is precisely what I wish to achieve. I am located in the UK. Can any members recommend a specialist who might be able to achieve such a result?

Your case work would have been done before STS got their Lapping machine. I don’t think they quite reach the levels of LA Watchworks or Lewis watch co. but they can certainly refinish the case to a good level now. Perhaps it would be easiest to return it to them?

Do you know of any other specialists in the UK with a lapping machine who have a good reputation for this type of work?

Rocco Manfredi at Watchworks in Bristol has one. I had a few cases lapped by him about 5 or 6 years ago when he first bought the equipment.

This is bad. The watch has been ground to death. Look how high the crystal sits. A MKII case should have a nearly flush crystal. Only the bevel should be showing.

i had LA watchworks do my 176.007... and it was not a good job. i was completely disappointed after resending it there 3 or 4 times.

Just looked at their website and they position themselves as specialists of restoring Mark II cases. Has anyone else you know had work done by them?

It’s also getting pretty thin near the lugs..

Here is a youtube that shows the process.

That is pretty impressive. Always wondered how it was done.
