Speedmaster Lume issues?

Hello everyone,

Yesterday I purchased this Speedy without thinking too much about it because the price seemed like a once in a lifetime opportunity.

From the poor pictures I thought it was a late 80’s early 90’s model considering it was on a 1489/840 bracelet but upon closer inspection at home, I noticed the stepped dial! Haven’t managed to open the caseback so I’m just guessing it’s a 145.022-71.

Gave the crystal a gentle polish and cleaned the bracelet. And turned out very nice if I say so myself, I like the faded bezel.

Only ‘issue’ is the lume on the chrono second hand. Doesn’t seem to match the lume on the hour plots and the hour and minute hand. The hour and minute hand light up similar to the hour plots in the dark (so their not luminova), but the second hand doesn’t glow at all.

What do you guys think?

Thank you.

Original hand lume, and particularly the chrono hand lume, doesn’t always match the hour marker lume. In fact if all the lume looks too perfectly matching in colour I see that as a possible re lume and take a much closer look. Yours looks spot on for this period when we often see that very dark lume on the chrono hand which doesn’t react to uv well.

Interesting! Were the chrono hands made by a different manufacturer? Or did they use a different kind of lume?

It's not like one of those $10 flea market finds, but considering it was on an online marketplace I think the price was very good. Paid about 1500 euros for it ( ~$1750).

To my opinion, the price you paid is excellent!
How is the timekeeping? How’s the chono, all working fine?

I've only had it for about 15 hours but haven't noticed any problems with the watch. Chrono works as it should and keeps time perfectly.

That lume looks alright. If it bothers then have it relumed professionally. For this price, it is a super find!

That´s a bargain. Just rest your case and enjoy the watch 😀 (Relume in proper colour is always possible.)

Was just about to post the exact same thing. When the hour/minute/chrono hands perfectly match that’s a cause for further investigation.

On the other hand, the lume on the hands being slightly darker is exactly what I’d expect.

Thanks for the kind replies. I'm definitely not bothered by the colour difference so I'm not considering a re-lume.

Would've only been bothered if the lume wasn't original 😀

for 1500€ I wouldn't worry about any mismatch.

Not sure on the reason tbh.

Generally I would expect all hands to respond similarly to UV.

That is a cracking buy! Well done,
Wouldn't worry too much about the lume, once they go that way, even different indices on the dial can age differently, especially if moisture is a factor.

Just enjoy your very thrifty purchase 😀

Im having a hard time believing thats factory lume on the dial. Its so lumpy . Does this happen with age ?

You did very well with this gamble ,Enjoy that watch its a cracker for the price you paid.

I tried to take a picture of the lume in the dark (don’t have a UV light), but that was tricky since the lume dies after 2-3 seconds and my phone doesn’t react as fast.

Managed to take a picture with the a 3 second shutter time and it picked op the lume.

To me the lume seems original. As already said, it's very common that the handset has a darker patina than the dial plots due to different suppliers/use of lume mix. If I were you, I would not consider a relume, but enjoy the watch as is. Wear it in good health, it's seems to be in a nice, original condition, and the price is a steal

How those bargains are still possible ?

Congrats, very nice watch !

I would not worry about the lume neither, as it is very likely original and above all, desirable 👍
