Grey side of the moon with the 9300 Coaxial movement for $12,000 https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/...-co-axial-chronograph-44-25-mm-31193445199001

Racing white dial with 9900 coaxial mater chronometer for $8,750 https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/...ronometer-chronograph-44-25-mm-32930445104001

Does anyone know why the Grey dial is thousands more than the Racing dial with its older movement? What would make someone choose the Grey dial over the Racing, it appears they are also the same size.

Price difference is due to the ceramic case on the GSOTM.

I really enjoy the various xSOTM watches and continue to own without regret. If you're wanting the ceramic but don't want to pay MSRP, they're offered regularly at a pretty significant price drop on the secondary market.

The price difference is also due to the sand blasted platinum dial. Also the hands and markers are 18K white gold.

I really like the GSOTM. I'm not a big fan of alligator straps on sports watches, but that's easily remedied considering how many great strap options are available beyond Omega's catalog. My only complaint about GSOTM, DSOTM, etc. is they're fairly thick. I did try on the racing white dial at my Omega boutique and thought it wore great.

I have both. I bought the white racing first (and my first omega as it happens), then the GSOTM.

Whilst there are similarities there quite a few differences, some already listed.

    xSOTM:

    Ceramic Case
Precious metal dial detailing and hands
Ceramic Deployant clasp (the original GSOTM also came on a buckle option which was about $1k cheaper.
Arguable as there’s no hard evidence if this - but I’m guessing also made in smaller numbers than the speedy racing.

One thing where the Speedmaster Racing beats out the ‘of the moon’ is the certification. The Racing has the newer, METAS certified master chronometer mechanisms.

BTW - I suspect that the older ‘Side of the moon’ watches are being discontinued. Omega have stated they want all their watches Metas certified within the next couple of years. These models will need an upgrade to reach that i think. (Technically i’ve no idea why but if only for marketing reasons).

I have noticed some heavy discounts on all models except the Meteorite version recently. So keep a sharp eye out as you may pick one up at a reasonable discount. That will narrow the price gap I expect.

Whichever you decide to go for then you’ll be delighted I’m sure.

I’m now on the hunt for a Dark Side to add to the collection. :D

For what it is worth, if you can only have one, then go for the Racing and use some of the saving to buy a steel strap. If you live anywhere with heat then the leather strap will limit time on the wrist unless you’re keen on buying replacement straps often. There’s not an obvious leather alternative fie the GSOTM that would ho well. Unless you like NATO straps. Just my thoughts after owning both for a few weeks and getting into UK summer - which is hardly hot by global standards!

Yes it is a very difficult watch to photograph well. And the dial does need strong light to sparkle. In Flat light photo wise both look quite similar!

The grey dial is beautiful and a little more elegant than the white dial racing watch. This watch however is out of my price range but if I could afford it, I would love to buy it but I do prefer the white dial over the gray. :)

Awesome I also have both. The GSOTM is such a beauty but I just don’t like that there is no matching bracelet for the xSOTM watches. I like straps but always want to go back to bracelet. I sold my DSOTM Pitch Black because it was to dressy for casual and too casual for dress.

For that alone the white racing wins. The original 9300 is a killer as is the blue Moonphase.

I saw GSOTM in AD, the dial has too much unused space.
And it comes on gator strap only, more $$$ in a year or two to change it.

I also want to add two things:

    1) Grey leather strap is totally killer awesome.
    2) Red speedy text and second hand tip so much nicer than orange IMO. Matter of fact if most speedies had red accents I'd be broke.
    3) This thread has me thinking I want to add GSOTM to my DSOTM for reasons unkown!

When I was trying the apollo8 at a UK OB they mentioned they had an offer on the DSOTM at the moment, 10% if I remember correctly.

I wish the GSOTM had a metal bracelet. If it did I may have tried for that one instead. Love my white dial though.

5EDD7150-0CBD-4038-82CA-FF6534B98113.jpeg I have the grey side and the racing black/orange. I feel the weight difference immediately. My racing accepts bracelet and leather straps with more ease than the grey side. If I had to choose between the two I would lean toward grey side! Love the dial. Just been serviced so I have new hands, pushers and crown. Love it!

To anyone with both of these watches, do you notice the case thickness difference?

Only if the GSOTM is on a nato strap does the watch feel thicker. On leather leather strap can’t say I notice anything Compared to the racing on steel.

I've long lusted after the grey side, but the thickness is the only thing that has kept me away.

For what reasons? Too tall visually? Won't fit under a tailored short cuff? Have you tried one on?

On paper the xSotM watches are tall but I've found that you don't notice it unless you're staring at the sides. Not sure about you, but I prefer to stare at dials of my watches :)

Due to the ceramic, the wider and taller watches (relative the Moon watch) don't wear as if they're too tall or wide compared to the equivalent in steel. I find they sit nicely in place as well due to the reduced weight of the ceramic, i.e. Less wobble on the wrist.
