The movie may have been in the production phase and filming before the 3861 was available.

Or maybe the production wants to stay true to the real world 😉

Maybe I'm bias, but I just like the 1861 dial so much better, aesthetically.

During my GTG and story telling about wrist watches in space, it's amazing how youngsters believe in the stuff they saw in movies
😁
Movies and popular culture depict "reality" as imagined trope and unrealistic belief. During a lecture on historical research in the artworld, we learned that in 2006 serious worldwide academic research for papers on the subject of Leonardi da Vinci resulted in 5 million hits, while the term Leonardo di Caprio resulted in 35 million hits and the fictional da Vinci code movie resultd in 350 million hits...
Marketing and popular culture belief go a long way... and often do not show good taste.

The plot of the exchange is that Vespa guesses/mistakes the watch for a Rolex, and Craig corrects her, suggesting that Rolex and Omega may be confused/compared but that Bond prefers Omega over Rolex.

I understand that both you and Omega think this quip itself puts “a stick in the eye of Rolex,” as you put it.

But to me, as greasily employed in the film, I rather think that Omega jabbing this stick reflects more poorly on Omega than anything

I can absolutely see your interpretation of this scene, and when I first saw it, I never considered that viewpoint. At the time, I was actually more amused by it than anything else, as it came off to me like a very real interaction that could have happened between the two actors when they weren’t filming.

And, we do have to appreciate the real or imagined rivalry between these two brands…like a Hertz and Avis: Rolex has clearly been on top for years, so when Bond chooses to wear an Omeega, and a beautiful lady compliments him on it, it’s a perceived point for the brand, and guiltily satisfying for die-hard Omega fans, despite the obvious fabrication.
