Apparently it is a mystery. It only appears on the 105.003 in 1965 and Omega do not have any records of which case manufacturer they used.

I don't mean to scare anyone but I have seen that symbol in a crop circle at some point and that reference, the 105.003 was the first watch worn outside a spacecraft in outer space... in 1965

Not trying to imply extraterrestrial involvement but all signs appear to point to such, especially Omega covering up knowledge of the casemaker's origin

In the vacuum of knowledge, let’s make some stuff up.

    Hypothesis 1- Ash’s Aliens

    · Aliens and crop circles.

    · First EVA in 65 got the attention of an alien race, impressed with the Speedmaster they negotiated to make cases for Omega under a JV agreement.

    · But due to extraordinary shipping costs, they decided to only make it for their domestic market and stopped exporting to earth. Bought the exclusive rights to the straight lug case design till 2012.

Hypothesis 2- The first limited edition case

    · The engineers put the symbol in there to commemorate the Gemini Program, most active in 65.

    · Then the marketing guys found out 5 years later and decided to put commemorative markings on the outside of the case for Apollo. Taking all credit for commemorative markings. Engineers got pissed and gave them 861 movements from then on.

Hypothesis 3- HF and CR ran out of capacity

    · HF and/or CR was too busy making 105.012 asymmetric cases that they outsourced the last of the straight lug cases to their cousin Ricky James (RJ).

    · Omega found out and put an end to it, and in a rage scrapped the straight lug case design, never to be seen again till FOIS in 2012 after Ricky got abducted by aliens.

    What is your hypothesis?

How 'bout Hypothesis #4 - Omega's first Limited Edition!
Limited to the amount they can sell ;-)

Speedmaster marketing could use a new angle, aliens could well be a good direction.

I've always hoped Omega would start a partnership with the Star Trek franchise and have Captain Kirk wearing a "200th anniversary First Contact Limited Edition" Speedmaster Pro with a Starfleet patch subdial, and then of course the Klingons wear them too, because as Kahless said, a true warrior winds his own chronograph and avoids crystals that shatter in battle.

That caseback logo does look a bit klingon.
