Speedmaster 3861 bezel lost?

I have no clue...it's gone. I was visiting family this weekend, watch is fine. Then when I was taking the rental car back to the airport I noticed the bezel missing. Never dropped it, no bumps, I'm baffled. I hope this is covered under warranty 🙁

Ugh. I have calls to Tourneau as well as my local. My local said they can send it to Miami for a fix.

Has this happened to anyone?

Sorry to hear. Did you bump into a gambling chip by any chance?

Does this come under the "wasn't broken, shouldn't have been fixed" category? Or is it just a fluke that OP lost theirs?

It’s a reasonably common method of holding a fixed bezel in place. The advantage is that every time you remove the bezel, you replace the gasket, so that you get a “new” for every time, instead of a gradually loosening fit with the old system.

No idea what happened in the case of the OP, but in my experience when people say there wasn’t any impact, there was often one that they just didn’t register.

Still so odd. I took it to my AD today and they're sending it to Miami for a fix (4-12 weeks?). They are completely baffled as well since the hesalite is in perfect condition, no other visible markings on the case. To quote the warden from Shawshank, it just "disappeared like a fart in the wind."

Please keep us updated on this. I'd be curious to know if they will cover under warranty!

When the customer rep met me at the counter I asked her if she'd ever seen a naked Speedmaster! lol

I continue my way of thinking as whith 3861 caliber "problems". ¿Why the need of "improving" something that was performing fine over decades as it was becoming an icon? Money, of course!

It looks like it’s just missing the insert rather than the bezel itself. Am I wrong?

This is what my 145.022 69 looks like with no bezel ( and insert )

Since we are showing naked Speedy’s. Took this before sending it off to get a service.

Imagine getting into a rental, looking down and finding a Bezel, not any Bezel, but an Omega Speedmaster Bezel from arguably the best watch in the world. Now that'd be a story to tell, and one a darn site happier than the OP's. Commiserations there mate and no, I didn't.

The chances of a member of John Q Public knowing what a detached Speedmaster bezel found on the floor of a rental car is is pretty slim.

Wow — I believe some astronauts asked OMEGA to remove the bezels from their Speedys, so you’re (unintentionally) in good company! I’ve seen a picture of an astronaut and his bezel-less Speedy before, but can’t seem to find it tonight. It’s not a bad looking watch without the bezel (nor was Marlon Brando’s bezel-less Rolex GMT-Master, but I digress…). This thread has some background into why they may’ve wanted the bezels removed, but sadly, many details seem lost to time: http://www.collectspace.com/ubb/Forum14/HTML/000010-9.html

Speedys and bezels are a fun topic. @SpeedyPhill made a nice thread showing an alternate bezel design for the Speedmaster (along with pictures and other great information), conceived in a partnership with a NASA engineer. Never made their way into production for mass consumption, but a forum member @omegamike actually manufactured some for interested enthusiasts! See further down in SpeedyPhill’s thread for pics, or visit Mike’s website here. I quite like the design and prefer it to the tachometer, although I like to have all-OEM parts. It would be interesting if OMEGA allowed customers to customize their Speedy bezel insert - there’s so many great alternatives to the tachometer insert in their catalog.

Anyways OP, bummer about your bezel, but glad they’re making it right!

Finally reunited with her sister! Covered under warranty and a nice red leather box with it. Took 10 weeks from AD to Miami.

So was it the entire bezel that came off or just the tachy insert? Glad it's back in business.
