So I'm bored at work. Unless you press the "back" button, prepare to be subjected to the randomness of my musings...

Ed White wore a 105.003-65 on the first American space walk. Consequently, some collectors call that model the "Ed White."

Neil Armstrong wore a 105.012-65 and was the first to walk on the moon. Would you call that reference the "Neil Armstrong?" He didn't wear it on the moon.

Buzz wore his. Some are convinced his Speedy was a 145.012-67. Whereabouts unknown. Would you call that the "Buzz Aldrin?"

Gene Cernan was the last to walk on the moon, wearing a 105.012-66 in a CB case. Would you call this model the "Gene Cernan?"

Now you see what happens when I have too much (clap clap) time on my hands (for you Styx fans).

Any thoughts? About the Speedy models and nicknames, not my mental state.

    Thanks!

I'm just damn impressed you worked a Styx reference into all of that moon talk without anything related to Pink Floyd. Bravo!

    Wasn't Ed White's a -64?

All 105-003's seem to get given the Ed nickname though. ;)
Lot's of wannabe space walkers I expect. May be the peak of 'mere mortal' Speedy collectors I imagine, after picking up pre-moon 861's and then a later 321.

Obviously there's more than a few 'collecting gods' :) around here who push the envelope further back. I just can't grasp all the tiny nuances (or huge finances) to be able to take that next step.

Here is a photo of Wally's watch. It is a 2998-5 or 6

Judging by the sweep second hand, I would say 2998-5

    Cheers

I'll accept that with a citation? I haven't found a website or other authority to confirm it.

I'd be inclined accept that, as anything later should be spear tip. It will be interesting if "The Book" illuminates this better when it comes out.

Houston, we have a problem... Omega museum (and other sources) seems to think that Cernan worn a 105.003 on the last moon walk. So two nick names for the 105.003? The Ed Cernan White? :)

Here's my 105.003 meeting Gene's in Bienne. And Omega states itS the one he wore on the Apollo 17 mission.

Just racing off to work so don't have time to post the picture but I'm pretty sure Gene wore two Speedmasters on Apollo 17.
Cheap link to the other side ;) (without time for reading it, google image search threw up the two pictures I was looking for in page 2 of that thread)

The 105.003 as pictured above looks to have been on that JB Champion during flight so I'd expect the 105-012 mentioned in the first post here would have been the last Speedmaster worn on the surface of the moon.

Well, just know that Omega states the 105.003 to be the last on the moon. Bracelets could have been changed perhaps... Anyway, the one in the museum has a crystal that looked like it did scratch the surface of the moon :D

What does NASA say? A member who seems very knowledgeable about Speedmasters suggested Cernan's 105.012-66 was the last...

Gene had 2 In apollo 17. The 105.003 on JB and the 105.012 on velcro. Probably nobody will be able to know if he wore his 105.003 under the spacesuit during EVAs

Nicknames are fine, and I have certainly used "Ed White" to describe the 105.003, correct or not. The other "nicknames" don't seem to have the traction of that one.

But as noted above, these familiar names may not always accurately decribe the specific reference. And there is some doubt to this good day who wore what and when.

Omega reference numbers for vintage are quite simple and easy to learn and use to describe a particular example. So for that purpose, nothing beats the reference number, followed by the year.

As for modern Omega reference numbers..... Pratts! Wiil I B*******S!!!!!! pretty much sums it up.

Here is my 105.003 '64. It does have a bit of dust on it, so I leave open the possibility it has been to the moon.
