Speedmaster 2998-4

Hi all,

New here and really just looking to learn more about this piece.

Long story short I was gifted this Speedmaster by the original owner a couple years ago. I never got any information about it because I thought it was a cool watch but probably mostly worthless given its age. The crystal was beat to hell when I became the new owner and my knee jerk reaction was to have a new crystal on and have it COA. I then put it in my desk and didn’t look at it.

Recently my old friend passed away and it prompted me to look at the watch again. I took the case back off and found the reference (2998-4) and began my investigation. To my surprise, it seems to be quite a sought after piece.

I am not exactly looking to sell or part ways with this at this time, but I am curious on others thoughts/opinions/expertise on this.

Additionally, I would like to wear it on occasion and as of now, the bracelet fits but it quite tight despite the semi-expandable links. Does anyone have insight into what type of bracelet this is or where I might purchase an additional link?

Thanks much

Yep, desirable watch. Probably a 7077 or 7912 bracelet. I think it's a 7077, but if you show better photos of the removable links from the backside, we can be more certain.

Thanks for reply Dan!

Is this view helpful regarding the bracelet?

The other side of the bracelet is how one would identify it. The inside. You want to distinguish between the links that have the piece that slides out to remove the link, vs the links that need to be pried open. So the links near the clasp from the inside.

Oops. Thanks for clarification. A bit tough to photograph but seems to my untrained eye that this is the “pry” version.

Correct! So this is a 7077.
Gorgeous watch, by the way. 👍

I’d get it serviced by an independent with an Omega parts account. Find a strap you like and go that route. Bracelet links are a pain to source so patience will be needed. Yes this is a fantastic and desired watch … learn more at Speedmaster101.com.

You have a very special watch. Get it serviced from a good independent watchmaker (never send to Omega) and enjoy!

See speedmaster101.com for more information on your example.

That's a hell of a watch to show up here with. Congrats, and I agree with everyone saying just service it without polishing or replacing anything. It's a real First Omega In Space. I have the new one.

I suspected that may be the case but am disappointed because I like the bracelet and feel like it adds to the originality!

Thanks for the recommendation for speedmaster101, I did reach out to William because some of the information/assessment I saw on his site made me question the originality of this watch.

With patience, and money, you will find links. They are definitely out there. It's just that the people who are sitting on them are often collectors, and they would rather hold onto them for when they are needed than to sell them for some small amount of money. So that's the context.

Extra links, Submariner bezel lume pearls, various crowns, etc. ... these are things you buy when you see them and then you hoard them.

That is an amazing watch.

If you haven't already done so, read a little about the Apollo program and follow the next two Artemis missions, particularly Artemis 4 that is planning to land on the moon. Between your watch and the upcoming moon landing, it could make for some fun excitement.

Appreciate you insight!

I will hoard when given the opportunity 🤣

You could use a bracelet extender until you find additional links.
