This has been an interesting post to read!
The OP might not understand how we collectors value vintage watches, and the big NoNo´s..??

Here is a link to an interesting article regarding serviceparts etc (thanks @Spacefruit )

https://speedmaster101.com/blog/why-dont-we-want-service-parts-a-quick-guide-for-a-newcomer/
Thank you for posting the link to the article. If you send a watch into Omega to be serviced can you request that they not change certain original parts such as the bezel, dial, etc?

I understand how collectors value things. Nice article btw. As I have mentioned this 2998-1 with serial no 17761**** has original dial, case and dust cove and Back, still with watchmakers marks from original serving.
Only things replaced over the years are bezel
(Original base 1000 kept) min/hour hands. It’s been polished (Personal preference)
The patina on the face is 65 years in the making. This is a watch I have been wearing daily for the last 45 years. I have kept all replaced original parts over the years. for this watch clean shaven is more appealing than a 3 day growth.

In all honesty I don’t class my self as a collector but someone who adores there timepiece for it’s timeless classic looks. It makes me feel special owning it.

It's a lovely watch. And incredible to hear how long you've been with this watch. Enjoy

I would never trust them, there are lots of storys regarding the service that they have done to vintage watches...

I struggle with the bezel thing. Why would you want to wear such a watch with a totally incorrect bezel when you have an original one?

I would do the same if I wore the watch daily.
This base 1000 bezel is so expensive that I would not risk to lose it or further damage it. If you can´t stand the look of a base 500 bezel on this watch you could always go for a good repro base 1000 which is available now for little money and enjoy the look in the knowledge that you have your original in the safe.

I’ve heard stories also. Also Interesting story why the archives are no longer accessible.

Reviving this thread to put to bed some incorrect information supplied by the OP...

Photo of watch prior to service. new hands are original from omega and period correct. As you would be aware, any new parts are generally replaced with current day spares. Very lucky to find original hands for this model from omega.

While I am not an expert, I’ve seen a couple factory serviced/restored 2915/2998s. Those look like the modern luminova service hands I’ve seen them install on other watches. I do not believe those are original from the period.

they do. Only they choose not to release.

Omega does not have "original hands from the period" available. They just install modern service hands.

So when this thread first appeared, I ordered a pair of modern service hands, same as the OP has on their watch - these are not some NOS hands, just modern Luminova hands as we had stated...took a while since they had to come from Switzerland, but here's a photo once they arrived:

You can always remove the current Lume and re Lume with water based Tritium and use dried, strong Black Tea , resurrected with Water again to mimic the aged Radium colour of the Lume. And: The last original Base 1000 bezel in better condition , I sold, fetched $ 11.000. This one here should be worth around $ 8000.

Never tried tea before, coffee and other random discolorants, tea is a great idea to try as well!

Are there professionals doing this, who can match a new set of hands to match the patina of an aged dial?
..,and replacing luminova with tritium in the process?

The OP has a nice watch that he has enjoyed for a long time. I hope that he continues to gain much enjoyment from this watch on his wrist. 👍

I'm pretty sure as he has worn the watch daily for 45 years his opinion about it probably negates anything we say about it.

Love the watch! Not what I would've personally done, but I'm glad you're enjoying it and will continue to do so for (hopefully) another 45 years!

What an unknown new member, who has posted in a total of one thread, has to say about anything doesn't carry much weight. Everything may be true, or he may be a troll posting photos off the internet, or something in-between. And plenty of original owners have misconceptions and/or selective memory. We see it all the time. Credibility is earned over time and hopefully the OP will stick around and become a valued contributor. But since he hasn't logged in for over a month, it's more likely that this will be a one-off thread with some photos of a watch with a mix of original and service parts, and some misinformation that was thankfully corrected by @masteroftime, @padders, @Archer et al.
