This is amazing sale. But is it worth it? http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2017/watches-sale-l17053/lot.121.html
Worth it? Not to me. For that kind of cash the dial needs to say "Patek" or "Lange" to fit in my meager collection.
I love that omega and have wanted one for awhile but the NOS versions are too pricey IMO these days so that one at that price, no way but hopefully it is worth it for the buyer
You can get a fantastic 'NOS' 'watchco' seamaster 300 for less than 1/10 of that sotheby's piece. That's not an unobtainable goal...
High auction prices means more opportunities for the "design" team to introduce new vintage-inspired models come next March as a LE
And the 'PAUL NEWMAN PANDA' sold for 273k, the world has gone mad and got very wealthy, somehow I got left behind!
Interesting auction results.. I was surprised at some of the prices paid for quite ordinary watches .
Not the world, just a very small percentage of it. The wealth gap grows and this is where some of that wealth is being spent.
I got an idea of how the ultra wealthy spend the other day when I visited a well known watch dealer. The dealer was preparing a batch of watches to bring to a very famous person's home for a private showing and expected to sell a few. I had never realized this before, that the ultra-wealthy just summon a business to their home to bring a curated selection of what ever it is they sell be that clothing or watches. Incredible!
I'm guessing the winning bidder has deeper pockets than me, but given my position I'd rather have a watchco and $48k.
Now now boys, lets keep the sour grapes to a minimum. That sm 300 is a perfect example of a mediocre vintage sm300, with a few highly desirable features. 50,000.00 USD Wow, but to the one buyer it was worth it! I raise my glass of Aberfeldy single malt scotch with one cube to him, his "new" Seamaster 300 vintage, and his deep pockets! Cheers, well done. Me, I'm happy as a lark with my "new" Genuine Omega sm300 watchco. Which by the way is now selling for 1000.00 USD more than I paid, including shipping and customs duty. A rising tide raises all boats. Get YOUR watchco sm 300 while you still can! At worst you will posses, arguably, the coolest dive watch ever. Yes, better than my Rolex steel stunner submariner date.
I have mixed feelings.. great for sellers/ owners who bought "cheap" and now find they have something they can sell to pay for college, mortgage, pension etc. Not so great for the less wealthy priced out future collectors tho, and for those who brought/kept this hobby alive and can't afford it...
so what would 'this one' be worth? any idea if the 'hands' are OEM? I've never seen any other Seamaster 300 with those same hands?? curious. internally it's a cal 565. (PS, I'm NOT soliciting a valuation (on this forum), just curious about forum members thoughts on 'this watch' compared to the one sold at Sothebys). cheers
