A pre-1974 watch made with a -78 caseback? Must have been caught in a worm hole.

Sound engineers from the '70s are not known usually for their mental acuity...

Come on now, I believe her. I am pretty sure Buzz gave Speedmasters to everyone he met. ::facepalm1::

Okay, I'll play devils advocate here. I saw that auction as well.

I have recently shared conversations with quite a few of the Gemini and Apollo astronauts while working on a Speedmaster project I hope to share with you all in the next year or so.

Over the last 40+ years many of these guys have received more Speedmasters as gifts from Omega than they could possibly ever wear. Many, while not all are paid ambassadors, have represented or worked with Omega by participating in events sponsored by Omega. For their participation they have been given watches and all sorts of other Omega swag that just ends up piled in a box.

While I would love to know the exact history of the watch the claim may not be far fetched. It's not as if there has never been a relationship between Capitol Records and Apollo astronauts. I can picture a sound mixer pointing out his fondness for the watch worn by an astronaut he was working with and that astronaut slipping it off and saying "Take it, I've got another one."

I suppose anything is possible. I guess I have gotten a little jaded hanging around this board. ;)
I sent an ebay message requesting some better photos.

It is the same as any other collectable item - without provenance, it's just another Speedmaster.

this is not a 78 caseback, but a 76. Often misread, but 76 is still Huguenin Freres (see the sign), 78 is unknown maker.
