Some help with a year

I picked up this datejust for my wife yesterday and was wondering what year it may come from. I won’t be able to get it in front of my jeweler for a few days.

It is stamped “L4 62523D 18 “ on the bracelet and “491b”

Most the models I see with this marking have a date and this is a no date.

Best guesses or range will keep me entertained for now.

90s or earlier. Assuming it’s legit if you pop off the bracelet the serial is under one of the lugs. That can be dated. The lack of lume on the dial but T marks raises some concern but I’m no Rolex expert.

I didn’t get it my jeweler but I did get to a jeweler. He was kind enough to check it out for me. Advised that it is a 9 million serial number and he dated it around 86 ? Does that sound right ?

Ok so here is my next question. What is a service on this thing gonna cost me at my Rolex dealer ? (Or other reputable service place ) locally (San Antonio) I have not found a third party place that I trust to do it.

I think Rolex might have service prices on their website. My guess is at least $700. If you want it serviced by Rolex, send it directly to the Dallas RSC, don't mess around with a dealer.

My wife's Rolex DJ was overhauled by the Dallas RSC in Dec 2021. Base cost was $700, plus they replaced the crystal for $133 (chipped, they said). Adding in sales tax and return shipping it came to $975. So budget $1,000 now. Contact RSC directly and send it to them, don't fool around with your Rolex dealer.

Why send it to Rolex? Almost every major city has several watchmakers who have been servicing Rolexes like this for decades at a fraction of the cost. The two I know in my area would charge less than $500 to service this watch — and they wouldn’t force you to change the dial and hands like Rolex would.

A quick Google search finds at least a couple Rolex-certified watchmakers in San Antonio, and I know of at least two in Austin.

So my local Lee Michaels jewelry is a service center. You can see through the window the guy working on them in the back. I did a little research and I have read they may require I replace the hands ? Is that correct ? Would they make me change the dial also ? I don’t mind it like it is. I also am open to options for it. Right now it seems to run ok. I will learn more about it once the wife wears it awhile and tells me if it’s holding time. Based on what you see here does it look likes it’s ever been serviced ?

You will have to ask them, I doubt anyone on the forum knows the specific policy of your local AD. But personally, I suspect that they will not require dial/hand-set replacement unless the condition is so poor that it would compromise their ability to offer a warranty. Generally speaking, independent watchmakers with a Rolex parts account allow you more discretion than the RSC. However, if they need to replace a part, you may not be able to get the old part back, because many of the parts they receive are exchange-only.

My local AD will only do what you ask and they service in house. You need to have the conversation with yours. I’d budget a grand. My local independent $600.
