Great story. I was wondering : what happened to the NASA-marked/owned radial dialed Alaska that the Dutch astronaut's son had (that you had with you for a bit)? Returned to the mother-ship?

Well. Crazy story. I told him that he should keep it, but he wanted to sell. Although I strongly advised him to make sure that he would keep the numbers 'secret', it was published in an auction catalogue with all numbers exposed. It didn't take long before there was an official US government letter telling them that this watch was theirs ;-) So, the watch is back to where it came from. On the one hand, I pity this because the guy didn't know any better and should have got better guidance from the auction house, on the other hand, legally the watch belongs to NASA so that's where it needs to go. The watch was probably 'not returned' after a training session that Reinhard Furrer had during or before the STS-61A mission. When he passed away in the 1990s, the Dutch astronaut received it from the widow of Furrer as they were friends.

Great little write up. Thanks for sharing. You and omega have made some beautiful pieces over these last two years. The first ST was the first watch I tried to purchase at full retail but...I live in California 馃が. I still may get to pick one up someday for a reasonable price. Keep up the great work!

He should have listened 馃榾 But on the other (legal) hand, fully agreed...

I don鈥檛 understand. Why is living in California an issue?

Probably because the 12pm CEST release is 3am here in California

The watch was released at like 3am PST with no prior knowledge of its release and because of this several people living on the west coast of the US woke up to find the watch had already sold out.

@Robert-Jan Which watch, of all those in the picture, would people be the most surprised to find out gets a good amount of wrist time?

Thanks for your time and insights.

Sure, but if you didn鈥檛 know about the release it wouldn鈥檛 have made any difference if it was 3am, 8am, 2pm or 10pm. You still wouldn鈥檛 have known to go to the site to place a reservation. For the ST1, it was 8pm here, but I had no clue about the release, so also woke up and they were all allocated.

Not entirely true. Omega sent out an announcement email when released so the chance of seeing the announcement email at 3am vs regular daytime/evening hours ups the odds that you could鈥檝e snagged one. Anyway it鈥檚 a moot point now. The rollout for ST2 fixed this issue with some sneaky leaks 馃槈 and I was well aware of the date/time of the release.

Anyway back to the original thread, didn鈥檛 mean to throw us off topic with my comment above.

On the picture, the watches belong to people from a GTG we did in Munich, so I can only speak for myself. I think, that my gold Speedmaster gets most wrist time tbh.
