Got this with a very nice box set, and i came with a Florida jewelers sales receipt from Rhoads & Son. No longer in busniess it seems ? What i can read is, apart from the different prices in 1980 , is ;

la/fa watch ( for a watch ? ) 275 and GRPEW which i cant figure out.

Lovely box for a bracelet watch, my Speedy loves it

Thanks !

Could the last 3 letters stand for " payment each week" . Might make sense if it was bought on the never never.

It's the English language equivalent of this:

IT LIVES ON . . .

La might be 'layaway'.

There's an 'la 3671' as well as 'la watch', so La is not just to identify watches. 3671 might be the layaway customer account. If so, grpew might be related to layaway charges. But the sale says 'charge' and a layaway would likely have been 'on account', unless this is the second ticket that paid off the account? GRPEW is 4% of the total, which doesn't neatly translate to their 1.5 % monthly charge.

Nope. Florida state sales tax is 6% and localities can tack on up to another 1.5%.

My best guess :

La = Layaway (Layaway No.3671)

GRP = Gross Retail Price

EW = Extended Warranty $11.00 ?

FL state sales tax in 1980 was 4% according to FL Department of Revenue website. The $11 item is almost certainly the FL sales tax.

I concur that ew is 'each week', for the layaway payment.

Is it a kind of savings plan ? the jeweler keeps that watch in a safe until you pay the open sum ? Gross retail too makes sense, thnx !

Lawaway was 'thing' in the US until the late '80s or so. Department stores would let you 'buy' and item they would hold for you until you paid it off. Credit cards pretty much killed the need.

If you figure it out, you will attain legendary status on OF. There is a very long thread, maybe more than one, about this and to my knowledge the mystery remains unsolved despite the collective ingenuity of our members and every internet search engine available.

I just like to needlessly complicate matters for the sheer entertainment value. I'm an attorney. 😁

No. The $11 is Florida sales tax, which in 1980, was 4%.

Do the math.

Notice that the horizontal stroke is above the vertical stroke in the 't' in watch. This signifies a tendency to rebellion against standards and a desire to lead. This tells us something about Ms. Gagnon.
