Sold the Speedmaster...

... and I'm a little sad. It's a brilliant watch, but at 42mm just a smidgen too big for me, and I confess to a bit of love lost on the retro hands. OK, it's not really retro, since they've not changed much since the original, but maybe you got my gist.

I confess to selling because of the recent rise in market prices. It looks (to me) like the new model has temporarily increased the desirability of the earlier model. If not for that, I would have kept it. Sapphire Sandwich, it was.

I'm now down to only one watch! OK, one real watch. I've got some miserable POS Citizen eco-crap that I wear if I know I'll be in a position to get it damaged (working on the car, in the yard, etc.) and a can't-mention-it-on-this-forum watch that is for sale on the 'bay. So all I've got is my Tudor, which I really, really, really like and I'm going to make this an experiment to see if I can survive with just one watch.

I do have an experimental kickstarter microbrand coming in October to replace the Citizen for those times that I don't want to risk damaging my "good" watch, but who knows how that will turn out.

Wish me luck.

I really did have a point when I started this thread... I just forgot what it was. LOL

How much did you get for the Speedmaster?
What is the watch you can't-mention-on-this-forum?
What is the Kickstarter watch you. have coming? I have purchased 2 from Kickstarter and really like both of them.

Sometimes I think about selling my Speedmasters, but I just can’t do it. I don’t wear them very often, but one is a 1996 3590.50 which is the last Pro model with a tritium dial and hands. The other is a 1971 145.022 step dial that is in nearly mint condition, is the first model with the “The First Watch Worn On The Moon” case back medallion, and has a very rare 1175/640 bracelet.

I bought and sold two Speedmaster Pros and a Mark III before I found one that I wanted to keep - the First Omega in Space version. Like you, I never could learn to love the white hands. Love the FOIS hands, though.

The point is, Omega has made so many different variations of the Speedmaster, I’m sure there’s one out there you’d like. 😉

I think the suitcase housed Speedmasters will prove to be a solid value as time goes forward as long as all accessories are there, and the watch is kept in excellent condition. Many don't like the big box but it is a pretty impressive package for a $5k to $6k watch.

I'm not convinced that the current prices are that transitory, in the watch world it's a lot of watch for the money.

True that. I may regret this.

Trust me, I debated this move for a long time.

I can understand that at 42mm the moon watch may be on the large size for some. For those who may own the moon watch but don't like it on the wrist, then I propose the Speedmaster desk clock mode which I sometimes use when I am working.

Funny thing is. I've never really regretted selling one of the watches. It was just time to say goodbye. I think you will survive. Enjoy your speedless life!

I'm kind of hoping prices go back down so I'm not tempted to trade mine for something else. I don't think I will because I love my 3590.50 so much, but I definitely understand the temptation. Good luck "surviving" with just one watch!

I sold mine this year as well. Mainly because I’ve decided I’m either going to go for a vintage model, out get the new model when preowned prices die down on the 3861, whenever that will be. Either way, lots of research to do.

I'm in the same boat on the 3861. Just waiting for my moment to pounce!

Thanks. I too, cannot think of any regret except perhaps on my first Rolex, a tuna can bracelet (AKA 5 digit) Submariner. And every time I start to regret it, I remember that cheap-feeling bracelet, that the watch had been polished and brushed, and try to ignore current market prices.

It must be my week - this morning I sold the not-to-be-mentioned watch on eBay! Took a small loss on that one, but considering what it is, I feel fortunate to have sold it at all. The buyer saved a bunch from buying new, and I got a little more cash to spend frivolously on something frivolous.

Maybe I should get rid of that nasty Citizen, while I'm on a roll? LOL

I sold my 1861 hesalite earlier this year that i bought last year. Lovely watch, I just couldn’t connect with it…I’m a dive watch kinda guy.
What I do regret though, is selling my SMP Quartz to fund previously mentioned 1861. Back in 2010, it was my first luxury watch and I’ll regret it forever for selling it.

I sold the same SMP quartz in a partial trade to fund a PO 8900. But I’m already planning to add it back to the collection in the future, it’s really a great Seamaster and a perfect travel watch.
