Having been eliminated in another deadly sniping attack on ebay, I am wondering whether I join up with those cheating conniving snipers or tread the morally correct path and win nothing ;)

Vote yes for winner but sinner
Vote no for worthy but watchless

Sniping, with a tool or by manual bidding in the last seconds, is the way I always bid on Ebay. Nothing cheating or conniving about it, I don´t feel the need to expose my bidding until late in the auction and this technique facilitates that.

Nothing cheating or conniving about sniping. In fact it provides you with protection from nibblers and shillers.

I only snipe on eBay .

Despicable. Takes away the sport in it, like fishing with dynamite :D

Call me old fashioned, but what´s wrong nowadays with sportmanship?

10 seconds left...that's when I hid the bid button. Where's the point in showing your hand early?

Sniping is also great when the bidding ends at 04:00 in the morning....

Losing out to a sniper is nothing in comparison to the dreaded "This listing was ended by the seller because there was an error in the listing."

If everyone utilized proxy bidding the way it was meant to be used, assuming we were all rational and could identify our max value for the item, then sniping wouldn't be necessary. Unfortunately, most ebayers get emotional or don't understand the concept of proxy bidding and you end up with so-called bidding wars. Only way then to operate on eBay is to snipe with your maximum bid at the very end.

Been the cause of that status as well.... Easy way for a seller to de-list an item without any eBay complaints.

    Spoken like a true seller.

There's plenty more sport in sniping - patience, vigilance and knowing when to walk away - than in mindless bidding. Just as there's more skill in playing poker than playing slots.

    Do I sense a false dichotomy? ;)

Nothing wrong with sniping. Particularly helpful since many auctions end at 3am in Singapore, and I like my sleep!

I bid what I want to pay. Lest I forget and go bid less. There will be more.

How the heck is sniping cheating or immoral?

Sniping or not, the winner of the auction is the highest bidder. Losing to snipers has nothing to do with morality, it simply means you're not bidding high enough before the auction ends.

How does sniping work exactly? Is it some kind of software that makes sure you win?

Bid sniping is neither inherently despicable nor fun, it simply "is".

I know, I know... Some of you are thinking, "It depends on what the meaning of "is" is.
