Interesting to see this nice snail dial just sold for USD 78.125 incl. fee. Link: click. I know specifics of 51 examples but have only 1 other snail dial on record, which sold for EUR 156k in 2019 (see: click). Cleaner dial but replaced minute hand and not matching (also perhaps relumed as well and what about the right index print...)! Of the 51 I know at least 6 are not matching (but 1 could potentially be rematched) and even the one in the Longines museum is not(!) so this is a bit of a known issue with 5699's 😉

Anyway: (very) well bought I think.

Pics of both:

I agree, $78K USD seems a bit low when compared with the $62K USD that the example below sold for just 2 days earlier, on June 1. Maybe better photos would have helped the No. 266 (snail tachy). Or maybe the light patina put people off.

I won’t be surprised if it will show up - after a service and with new plexi - at Menta or so for 100k

I keep forgetting on occasion that EU uses decimals for commas. Did a double take. $78 bucks?????? 😲 Just lovely.

The Monaco one was published in Goldberger (2nd print I assume which I don’t have) so that may explain part of the premium paid

Intruiging one on ebay: https://www.ebay.it/itm/225985299029. Case only. CB 250 and case 132 so mismatching which is IMHO an indication that they were owned by 'something' which had a (large) number of them.

Not the first case only sale. This only sold for a much lower price. I would have perhaps acquired this would I have seen it earlier. https://www.ricardo.ch/de/a/longines-13zn-12-case-1231936912/

The font of the '371' inscription seems to be identical. Delivery date of these watches will have been (around) 1947. All 23086's with delivery indicated I know of were to the USA. These 2 cases are both from Europe. As stated above I assume they will have been owned by an army or company. I found this unit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/371st_Bombardment_Squadron to be (re)actived in 1946, part of the Strategic Air Command, so perhaps this is were they came from. Intruiging stuff.

This ^^ one sold for CHF 26k excl 25% fee. Well sold I think in the current market (given the average quality)

Another 5699 was at sold at the same auction but with (disclosed) wrong dial and movement. I could have lived with that but not for the price paid, mainly because I was unsure about the dial. It sold for CHF 6k excl. fee. Link: https://live.antiquorum.swiss/lots/view/1-AGSBYP/longines

I guess the above translates to :
"
The dial, movement and case are all very attractive, but they are put together incorrectly.
"

Please, write in English next time. English isn't my native language as well, yet it's default.
And yes, Mark020 states it was disclosed it came with an incorrect dial and movement.

Although all things considered, hammer price was not bad. If you think of it as the sum of its parts...
