SMP: Green or Black?

After my deliberation, I’m (almost) ready to pull the trigger on my first Omega. I’ve settled on a Seamaster 300m but I’m still torn between the green and the black dial versions. I intend for this to be my only watch to celebrate a milestone birthday.

My heart says Green - looks great, its new and relatively scarce. I also like the how the colour seems to shift depending on the light. My fear is that I might get bored of the green or outgrow it. Outside of the green rubber strap, there are potentially few other coloured straps that would work on the Green (please do shout if I’m wrong here!).

My brain says Black. Also looks great, can probably be worn with anything and is potentially a safer long term bet (black never goes out of fashion). Importantly, I can get a brand new black from a legit source for £800 less than I can get a Green one.

I’m therefore asking for personal opinions on which one you would go for and why? I’m particularly interested in wrist-appeal, wearability and long-term views.

Any opinions would be a fantastic help!

I don't own the green but I did own and enjoy the black dialled version for several years. It's a fine watch in any hue. but while the black dial is classic and quite dynamic in its own right, if I were buying now I'd probably go green. Omega did a nice job with this green, not too brash and not too mellow. It's a very well-executed update and I doubt it would be hard to move on if you tired of it.

There are a few black-dialled divers I prefer to the SMP, but no greens at the moment.

But both are superb -- no bad options here, IMO.

You said it’s going to be your only watch, so I’d go with the black dial for all the reasons you mentioned.

“Heart says green” says it all.

If you fall out of love keep it as a milestone/heirloom and get a black dialled watch later.

No love for the blue?? - personally I would go with black over green
Much love in fact. But ultimately I decided that green was my preferred colour option to compete against the black. Unfortunately I cant have them all. Or can I...

Hi

I have a green Seamaster, fantastic purchase! The green colour balance is better in my opinion as it has no red font on the dial.

I agree with this. Black dial if its going to be your only watch, but if you're planning on adding another down the road that has a black dial (maybe a speedmaster?) then the green would compliment that well.
As others have stated, both are excellent choices. Good luck and please keep us updated on your choice!

There are a million dive watches with a black dial. If it were me, I'd get the SMP with the green dial.

My personal choice would be the green as I think it’s a cracking piece and it would make a brilliant 3-piece collection for myself but I think you go with your heart on the purchase and then if you ever fall out of love with the watch then sell it and get something you love at that time.

Green. Been wearing mine daily since I picked it up in November. I mean, the black (and blue) are very nice watches but the green is special. Who knows if it'll stick around in the catalog.

Thanks all - some great views and opinions. I did enquire at the dealer if they could match the hefty discount that’s available on the black one. Unfortunately no luck - but they will throw in a free service voucher to use in the future. So saving myself £700 or £800 (whatever the service charges are in 5+ years. Still undecided. I need to sleep on it!

Love the green. But as an only watch (or shall we say first…) I’d go with blue or black on these.
That way and in this day and age you can wear it for any occasion. I had a Speedmaster as my only watch for years and it works in casual and formal settings and anything in between. I’d expect this to be true for the Seamaster 300 the same way. Classy and functional and robust. The green one is a bit more of a statement piece that might not be something you’d want wear at a formal event or in a boardroom as it draws more attention.
It is a cool watch though, no question.

I voted black for my first dive watch, and my second. The green does look great though…..

No wrong answers here. By the way, the green is now available on Omega.com since yesterday:

I love my green SMP. It's a fun watch. Since it's summer in Brazil, I've been wearing mine in the rubber strap since Dec. 22nd, 22 days in a row, and I love it more every day. It looks specially awesome at the beach or at the pool under the bright sun.

It gained 1.6s a day since Dec. 22nd by the way.

The green is not obnoxious and does not stand out. I'd have no problem wearing it in any formal situation or professional setting. It is not a statement piece to me. It's just not that green

Get both! You could get the current green smp then maybe the previous generation in black. It’s your birthday so treat yourself, happy birthday!

But if it does stand out in conversation:

(Throw a casual gesture to the watch.)

You: "Oh, yeah, this... Barista of the year. What can I say?"

Them: "Oh! Isn't that grand!"

You: "Yes, but we say Grande."

(Pause for laughter.)

I bought a green Superocean Heritage last year but wish I'd bought the green SMP.
The grey or blue would be my next option but black and white are also handsome timepieces and there isn't really a wrong choice.
