Hi ez

There is a bit of a misunderstanding here. The simplest option for me is to return it to Cousins. I just thought it may have been of interest to someone here as it was sort of "pre faded". As you say, these dials are widely available in perfect condition.

Just an FYI (back to the original thread title) and with no disrespect to the OP (GLWS if you sell it) ... Ofrei has the SM300 date (166.024) dials available on their web site. The non-date SM300 have been out-of-stock for a while.

The non date is available as well - still being produced by Omega. I buy them often.

I've been looking at building one of these with the date! This is such an iconic time piece! But wow, the parts prices are outrageous! I wonder if they will drop in the future after the popularity of the new SM300 wears down a little?

This will be good news to many!

Question: Al it it true that the non date dial lume is SL C3? I have seen this said on various other forums and in some pics the modern service no date looks like it could be and in others it just looks white like my own date dial.

Here's one that looks greenish/ yellow that seems to match the bezel and hands. Copied from WatchCo images I hope I have not transgressed by posting it here.

I have only seen the green C3 on the no-date dials. The date dials I have seen with either C1 or C3. The date dials have the same part number no matter what the lume colour is, so it's a crap shoot when I order them in what version I will get - usually C1.

The prices on these are not going down, if anything they will increase in price as they have over the last few years. Get them while you still can.

Factor in a ridiculous exchange rate on top of the large regular price increase and it gets worse!

I suppose thats where tax refunds come in handy.

Al is there a different part number between C1 and C3 on the no-date dials?

No. I have never seen a C1 non-date dial.

Just coming back to this and a couple of points of possible interest.
The first is that Cousins don't allow returns on this sort of part - it seems to be all watch parts so, be careful if using them. This was a bit of a surprise to me.
The second is that there is nothing wrong with the dial, just that it is a C1 dial and I didn't let it charge sufficiently. I had not realised these came in C1 but Al's post has clarified that for me. The one on the left is the C1. Unfortunately, with C3 hands it is very mismatched. Anyway, I am going to keep it (no choice!) and possibly put it on my SM as the lume matches these bezels rather well. I will need to relume some hands to match.... Really don't fancy trying that broad hour hand though so some practice is in order first.

Reluming that hour hand can be a chore...consistency of the lume is important - not too thick and not too thin, and try to do it in one shot. If you have to start over, be careful cleaning off the lume paste because it is quite abrasive and can easily scratch the polished hand.

I personally hate relume work - I don't do it enough to be really good at it, and it's something that can be quite tricky.

Good luck, and let me know how you make out.

Hmm, that may be true! First attempt at re-luming with a Bergeon kit on an old set of hands. This is a pair from my SM300 build and I marked them so they are now my trial hands for everything. They are now very marked...

The lume is drying but the minute hand looks very nice. That big wide hour hand not so as it is very hard to fill so, I even have some along the edge and it seems to have a few porous areas. It has to go on thin so the hand is not too bulky. Will see how it dries.

Ah well, first try so, leave to dry, scrape off and try again.

If you get the technique down, maybe I'll be sending hands to you! 😀

Ha, ha. I can see why you don't like doing it though, Al. Pretty tricky to sweep across in one go with the wide hand. I thought the narrow hand was not too bad but, it hasn't dried yet...

If I get it sorted so I'm comfortable, the first ones to do are on this 354 as it has been flaking off. Am not sure what colour this should be as it is currently black and crumbly! As it's a 1954/55 and it's not marked for Tritium, it may even be filled with Radium. Not nice if you breath it in.

Actually, looking at the dial there is no lume at all so, this may just have been a black filler in the hands? Let's see if @John R Smith has an opinion as he's my goto expert on the style of these old bumpers.

Get your local Omega authorized watchmaker to order you one. You won't find easily from a parts distributer and if you do the price will be exorbitant.

How did you scratch the hands so badly?

I mix my luminous with LOreal clear enamel nail polish. Thin enough to scoop up on a flat toothpick and run it along the bottom of the hands but only close enough to let the opening absorb the solution.

Any error. I always remove from the backside to avoid scratching the face of the hands
