You may notice some slight disruptions occasionally at the moment, if you notice anything weird, like broken pages (as in still broken after refreshing a couple of times, or errors) or anything let us know at [email protected] or [email protected]

And we're back, on a shiny new version of PHP, which should be about 25% faster than previous.

Let us know if you see anything weird happening.

Do you mean besides Steve photoshopping our faces on abstract pictures?

Well he's retired, he has a lot of time on his hands, so its either that or getting into REAL trouble. Like eBay trouble. With credit cards.

Hi guys
We've already got a whole thread thanking you guys for running this, so I won't repeat those sentiments here. However I was wondering, what are the costs of running a forum like this? And how are they covered?
Thanks
Daniel

My collection probably isn't worth killing for, just yet!

The site costs dramatically less than you probably think. We're thinking of upgrading soon to more powerful hardware, but even that upgraded hardware is dramatically cheaper than you think. There are two ways to do things, you can either spend lots of money on server hardware and then keep throwing money at it to make it faster, or you can run a custom environment, tune it for performance, and keep everything light and efficient. Doing the later can give performance gains in the 10X to 50X range over a conventional setup.

You really wouldn't believe me if I told you how little we pay.

Oh and by the way, at some point we may remove signatures or at the least limit them to a single line of text only. Two reasons, pages load faster (both because the server does less, and because your computer downloads less) and also Trev being the designer hates things that are an eyesore, like most graphical signatures are.

I'd be okay with losing the signatures if it keeps things simple and quick.

See some people have reasonably inoffensive signatures, then there's going to be someone with a bright blue orange and purple signature with stupid crap on it, and if we tell /him/ to delete his signature because it makes people's eyes bleed with its awfulness he'll be like "How come so and so is allowed to have a Seamaster logo" and if we explain to him that his signature looks awful he'll get all hurt.

The only way to be fair is to eliminate signatures completely, or set a maximum size for text or a picture.

Had to run some updates about an hour ago that required some downtime to install, should be fine now, if not let us know!
