Just took delivery of my first worldtimer. As with GMTs they appeal to the adventurer, but unlike GMTs, worldtimers speak to an interest in geopolitics through the cities that atre chosen to represent different time-zones. Vintage worldtimers take us back to different periods, and the place where the watch was made, or the market the watch is targeted at, influences the decision as to which cities are used.

Mine, for example, will always be a reminder of a time when Mumbai was called Bombay, and unusually, it offers Jerusalem to represent GMT +2 hours which I've never seen on any other watch.

I'd love to see pictures of your worldtimers, and any stories that might explain the places they display.

    Thanks for posting.

The enamel dial is out of this world, it is my favorite rendition of Patek Philippe's world time watches, my second favorite is a rendition with scissor hands also from the 1930s, also manufactured by Patek Philippe.

Not a true worldtimer, ss it only shows one city at a time, but the movement and how it works is exemplary. This one was actually used for it's intended purpose.

I only have one World Time watch at the present time, a Svend Andersen 'Communication' model from the early 90's. Svend Andersen worked in Patek Philippe's Grand Complications workshop for nine years before setting out on his own. He made this world timer as an homage piece to the great world timers of Patek Philippe which he had seen while working for them. It's in a similar case size (31mm) as the original Louis Cottier design, along with tear drop lugs. The knurled bezel is rotated by hand to set your home city, and inner 24 hour ring rotates counter-clockwise at 1/2 speed to indicate the times in the various cities. It contains a well finished Frederic Piguet automatic movement and total thickness of the watch is only 7mm, quite an achievement for an automatic world time watch.

If the watch doesn't have Athens on it as a reference, I won't touch it! Insulting, especially all that ancient Greece has done for the Time-keeping world! lol I stand firm!

That one reminds me of the old joke about the chap who arrives in Honolulu for the first time and turns to someone in the street and says: “tell me, do you pronounce it Hawaii or Havaii?”

    “Havaii”, replies the local.

    “Thank you” says the traveler.

    “You’re velcome” says the local.

    Here's a Seiko.

I'll have to dig through my other watches to see if I have any others.

Nice. Perhaps I should start looking out for one of those to keep company with my Seiko Navigator.
