An incredible watch...together, you both will become vintage with the years. All the Subs Rolex has made are classics.

The first sub I ever fell in love with was a 5513/5517 milsub. I unfortunately never hit the lottery so was never able to afford one. The next in line was to continue to follow the lineage of those milsubs to subsequent no date subs like regular 5513s and eventually 14060; both of which, as the years went by, have grown in price and have become cost prohibitive. So two years ago I put my name on a list at a local AD. The store is on my way home from work so I would stop by on a semi-regular basis to chat with the employees there. None of them were really into vintage watches but we would talk about various topics in the modern watch world. I don't really like much of the other selections they have so I usually wouldn't stay too long.

Well Friday afternoon I got the call.

It's not the matte dial subs that I love. There is just something charming about that vintage matte dial with patina tritium lume that I just love. But it is a no-date sub which I like. It's also the first modern watch I have ever owned. Not luxury modern watch, modern watch period.

Being my first modern watch I found a few things interesting that I had never considered prior. The first thing that I found surprising while holding and wearing it was how Rolex, or any other brand for that matter, could take a material like Steel and somehow make it feel luxury or premium. It's not gold or platinum but yet it feels like you are wearing a premium item. The machining on it is amazing, but then again I have nothing to compare it too. I have already used the rotating bezel to time some different things I was doing around the house and every time I grab the serrated edges I am taken back by just how sharp they are. The other thing that I love is the microadjustable clasp that lets you resize the watch on the fly. I always hate working with spring bars!

The other thing I found surprising was the heft. My speedy isn't a small watch but I guess the added bulk of the oyster bracelet adds weight that never lets you forget the watch is there.

In all its been a pleasurable wearing experience thus far. One of my dislikes is the size. I have small wrists and this is a big watch. I have already had to take 3 links out and depending on how cold I am it can still feel too big at times and it does overhang a bit.

Anyways, I know this is OF and sometimes we (including me) give Rolex flack but I was excited when the call came and y'all are my family so I wanted to share my excitement. Happy holiday weekend!
Congrats Bro !

it’s a nice watch. Like you I was looking for matte but it’s too expensive for me (for now). When I’ve had a more modern on my wrist, I had same feelings of quality, premium but it was too big on my chicken wrist ! So .. I sold the watch last year and it was may be a mistake !

have a good day and enjoy your sub

Thanks Vince. Sounds like I have the same wrist issue. The struggle is real for sure. I was joking around with @JwRosenthal that I need to start doing some forearm curls just to get my street cred up!

My daily beater for over a decade. Still love it, but having fun with other brands now, like Omega. 😀

I’ve been enjoying a touch of modern lately. It’s nice to be able to swim or fish with it on, without worrying about water ingress.

Classic watches. Love the looks of the 4 and 5 digit. IMO, 4 and 5 digit was peak submariner.

Mine's just back from spa. Pics over the weekend. I can say though, the 16610 is a remarkable piece. Better so when tuned up! When I opened the box I was stunned at how much better it looks with just a light case/bracelet polishing. New mainspring, seals and some internals will keep it going for another cycle. It truly is like a new watch.

Mrs duc can't stand to see me struggle to take "fine" pictures. So, she forced these on me:

Nice pic !
The 124060 is the best Submariner ever made and my favorite diver by far. Perfect both functionally and aesthetically.
