Ah yes, the Tilley. A hat that can be eaten by an elephant, pooped out the other end, washed, and still used! In fact that same hat went through that process 3 times.
I do have one somewhere in a closet, and it has never been through an elephant, but still a pretty good hat We often were close to the company store in Toronto and would always drop in to see what they had.
I bought my first Tilly at the Boston Boat Show in early 1983. Mr. Tilly himself wrote my name inside in ball-point (now illegible). I brought it to England when I returned here later that year so I think it has a plausible claim to be the first Tilly this side of the Atlantic.
The inside is in bad shape from sweat over the years and I keep thinking of returning for refurbishment -- must get it done, I can't bond with its recent replacement in the same way.
Yeah, photo, yeah I know, got to find it first.
Should be able to just take it to the dry cleaners?

Here was a hat I was proud to earn and wear when in the US Navy being in SBU XI brown water navy in the 1980's-1990's we were issued Black Berets then when you got NEC 9533 Combat craft crewmember qualified you got the flash to put on the beret the design is the twin 50 machine gun tub on the PBR a tradition from Vietnam took me almost a year to earn that qualification. Got the beret in my shadow box now.

My beloved Stetson; quite some time ago now - the hat is probably less worse for wear than I:
P.S. You can't see it, but I was wearing an SMP 2531.80 that day - my favorite and daily watch at the time. 😀
Newly added to the wardrobe: another cap. I found it with my girlfriend in a local flea market and it is made out of tweed.
I am not sure how popular this is in other places, but tweed has been worn in Europe for centuries. It is sheep wool and this one is rich in tradition as Harris Tweed (a specific kind) is woven in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.
Cheers!
They’re becoming increasingly popular in the UK with the younger generations now, influenced no doubt by the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Baker Boy cap.
The 5 panel flat cap was de rigueur outdoor wear for most men until quite recently.
Harris Tweed is as good as it gets.
You wear yours well...
