Watches, straps, bracelets, tools… quickly accumulate in a big mess once running out space in a watch box… so I started thinking about creating a custom storage.

The criteria were: small in size but 20+ watch capacity, no direct light, easy access and secure storage… while not breaking the bank!

Options on the market weren’t hugely satisfying, so I decided to have a go at assembling mine.

I bought a second-hand silverware / cutlery storage box locally.

Every drawer came with custom plastic trays for cutlery, which I removed.

I then bought some black foam squares (2 cm high or so), which I started cutting to fit the drawers and watches. They come pre-cut which makes them really easy to size.

This is the end result:
  • three drawers for watches on straps.
  • bottom drawer with two layers of foam to put watches on bracelets.

I am decently happy with the result. Dimensions are perfect, very little lost space. The storage box looks cheap though, so next time I’ll start with a more qualitative box!

What do you think?

Looks great! 👍👊

I've seen some Edwardian (?) cutlery storage drawers that are full four legged pieces of furniture in themselves. Very expensive though.

Certain sewing tables or cantilever sewing boxes are sometimes tempting.

I'm always on the look out for coffee tables, pot plant stands or chest of drawers with a big enough top space (lip) that could be converted to a 'secret' watch storage space.

Still hunting / dreaming, for now.

The dimensions are not quite easy to get right. I looked into coffee trays too, etc. but often these are too shallow. I wanted to be able to insert foam to avoid watches in direct contact with wood.

Another good and relatively inexpensive example is a custom shelf like this, which has a more vintage style.
